Book Overview

Leaders are trained to decide, but rarely trained to discern. The GreenLight Factor fills that gap. Using the universally understood traffic light as its central teaching device, the book offers a clear framework for reading the signals at life’s and leadership’s most consequential moments: when to go, when to pause, and when to stop.

Written for professionals, executives, ministry and nonprofit leaders, and emerging leaders standing at a crossroads, the book combines original scholarly research, more than two decades of global leadership experience, and a faith-informed perspective. It is practical enough to use on Monday morning and reflective enough to guide the biggest decisions of a career.

Why This Book, Why Now

  • Career transitions are more frequent and more consequential than ever, and many leaders feel unequipped to navigate them.
  • Most leadership and career books focus on strategy and planning. This one focuses on discernment, the missing step between wanting change and making it.
  • Readers increasingly seek frameworks that honor purpose, values, and faith alongside professional ambition.
  • A simple, visual metaphor makes the framework easy to remember, teach, and share with teams, cohorts, and congregations.

Positioning: Comparable Titles

The GreenLight Factor sits among the most trusted books on career transition, calling, and decision-making, and adds what they do not: a discernment framework built specifically for leaders.

If readers enjoyed……The GreenLight Factor adds
Designing Your Life (Burnett & Evans)A discernment framework built for leaders, not only a design-thinking exercise
Half Time (Buford)A practical decision tool for every inflection point, not one midlife shift
Transitions (Bridges)A research-grounded framework for action, not only understanding the emotional process
Decisive (Heath & Heath)Decision-making that includes calling, purpose, and faith, not just process
Let Your Life Speak (Palmer)A structured method to act on what you discern

Authors, scholars, legal leaders and cultural storytellers at the Africana Arts & Humanities Festival. On this occasion I joined with literary creatives as a featured author to celebrate 250 years of black life, culture, creativity, and impact. This literary event promises powerful conversations, with dynamic voices shaping our communities today.

Organizers voice that this year’s speakers reflect the diversity of our culture and history.

The beauty, the brilliance, and the warmth of the Africana Humanities Festival was divine. To the organizers, thank you for creating a space where our stories, our scholarship, and our voices are not just welcomed but celebrated. Being featured as an author and speaker at this 250-anniversary festival was an honor.

Great partnering with co-session presenter R. Manasseh Thornton

To every single person who stopped by my table, sat in my session, picked up the assessment, asked questions, and shared your own stories with me, YOU are the reason this work exists. The conversations we had confirmed everything I believe about why The GreenLight Factor needed to be written.
