A Piece of Work

I bought this piece of artwork in Mombasa, Kenya, East Africa during a visit. I have loved the piece ever since. It’s very simple. Didn’t break the bank but for some reason I like it a lot. I guess maybe it’s due to its simplicity.

Looking at it it tells a story that can be interpreted however I like. I could critique their dress. I could ponder what they’re talking about? Are they preparing for a fight? Going hunting? Or simply learning from each other?

No matter what, the simplicity of this photo sparks my interest. Not only that, but it also is a reminder of a trip to a beautiful land. The land of Roots.

A Cup of Coffee

coffe

If we were having coffee right now I’d tell you how much I still love my delicious black tea. It seems I am never able to quiet my desire for that soothing hot taste. The drive and energy it gives reinvigorates my day. Sometimes I sneak away for fear of those questioning eyes saying…”what’s up with her and her constant commute to the coffee machine”? Forget them I say! I work more assiduously when I’m fully dosed up!

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I’ve started this …well not really started but revamped my blog. That said, WordPress has this amazing Blogging University which is available for those who are interested in pushing their personal writing careers up a notch. So I decided to enroll and have been doing so for the past six months. The thought came to me after I published my book on Success Strategies and considered it an advantage to share insights on success, inspiration and motivation to those who need a lil push to get things underway. Through enrollment in different courses, I have learned how to fix my blog just the way I like it. Mistakes do occur, but I stealthily correct and am now able to put thoughts and ideas into my nonacademic writing.

If we were having coffee right now I’d tell you that I’m even into taking pictures! I love candid shots! Never been a fan of ‘posing’ (I’ll save that for when I am on the runway)! Pictures bring life to my writing! Hence my childlike interest.

If we were having coffee right now I’d tell you that my love for travelling, and taking in the breathtaking view of the sun, sand, and sea has been reminiscent of my past memories of my youthful years. I now make haste to use those weekend scurried days …being a workaholic and all (confession – smile). It’s no secret that pulling away forces our thinking skills to greater heights. So I have decided to reconnect with nature’s streams, rivers, and sea.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that we need to do this more. Meeting with you my friend provides that insatiable desire to bare my heart, my soul to someone who understands life’s simple things void of embarrassment. So cheers to you my coffee mate! Soon we shall surely meet.

Disconnected: Writing, Not Writing

IMG_4996

A workaholic, insatiable learner, and serial volunteer. That’s what I do when I’m not writing. I volunteer in activities that contribute to the growth and personal development of individuals. My passion is connected to my vision to see a world where individuals can become successful, however they define it. So I invest the time to speak with individuals and groups throughout the local, national, and international community. Totally satisfying!

In search of being refreshed, I recharge through family play and engaging in the world of film. I hunger for movies. Drama, sci-fi, action, comedy, love…, it doesn’t matter, it all works! It reboots my mind. And when it’s done, I’m able to return to my past-time,  to write.

Here ends my tale of writing, and not writing.

The Letter

I love writing letters. Turning my thoughts into letter form is stimulating. Most of all the satisfaction comes through it being uninterrupted. I write to my love, my kids, my friends and most of all…my God.

At times letters go unmailed.Oft they may even be ignored. This has not been a problem because my feat was to clear my head.  Pause, take a second or two, and read a letter written a few months ago.

Learning: Social …Inspires

You study, study, study, and at the end, you are lucky enough to discover the greatest gift of education: that you know nothing at all. -EJ Koh.

Knowing nothing at all. That has been my experience. Armed with more than one Masters, one Bachelors degree, and even a Doctorate; I have concluded that the more I learn, the more there is yet to learn. Never-the-less, I commit to remain open to the globe’s amazing secrets that can only be discovered through reading, writing, and exploring.

A blank slate can be a crucial link to achieve success. We are free to do whatever we want. Like a child, we are free to start anew, afresh. Free to go in any direction . So even when you’re afraid, take the step. Move forward, but first… believe that you can.

Sky: The Space to Write

I write whenever it hits. I must stop, record, write. If I don’t do so immediately…in a flash, it’s gone. So I have learnt to capture the words as they come. Anywhere, anyhow, anytime.

Where do I write? In a quiet place. A place where I can hear my thoughts, the stirrings of my heart, my soul. I write whenever it hits. I must stop, record, write. If I don’t do so immediately…in a flash, it’s gone. So I have learnt to capture the words as they come. Anywhere, anyhow, anytime.

The equipment I use for writing is anything (smile). When those inspiring writing moments come, I grab the cell phone and write in notes. Sometimes, I write on paper if I can grab one quickly. So I keep note pads all over. In my car, on my nightstand, the traditional desk, dining table, anywhere. I must capture those inspiring writing moments. Then when I am ready to publish my posts, I use my laptop. Sometimes I start in drafts in the WordPress App. But I usually prefer to post on my laptop since it offers the opportunity to edit, tag etc., which I find much easier. Yes, I know this can be done in the App but going the laptop route is my preference before publishing.

To write, all I need in a physical space is simply peace, quiet, and absolute serenity. That’s all. It could be in an airplane in the sky, but for some reason it works. I sleep. I awake my mind is fresh, anew, and I write. Know that serenity can even be found in a crowded space. A train, a plane, a park, an event that I’m allowed to people watch. To see and experience nature amidst the hustle and bustle of people everywhere. The only commonality is that no one can be speaking to me directly (or I won’t hear them or my thoughts (smile). Sounds poetic? Maybe it is. Writing is music to me.

So, Write on writers.

Purpose. A Story: A Single Image

The world can make us ponder the relevance of life…, of things that should be so straight forward, yet they defy the odds. We look out and there seems to be only dark woods.

woman in woods pic

Years ago, in my graduate Health Administration class at the University of Florida, I was the only person of color. Then later at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, again I was the only person of color in my class in the field. Maybe naive but it seemed rather strange to me. But I persisted, and graduated. After spending years in medical practice management I look around and find myself in a strange situation. Though I’m qualified with experience the same situation haunts…a person of color who must work harder to prove that hey…, I can do the job.

The world can make us ponder the relevance of life…, of things that should be so straight forward, yet they defy the odds. We look out and there seems to be only dark woods. For those who are not strong enough, they give up. Some find rescue in the ditches. For those who are stronger, they hold onto a clutch until they can stand again.

Today be encouraged. Stand tall for the light will shine again. It is just around the corner. So keep your eyes open so you won’t miss it. Stay on purpose…, be strong. Don’t Give Up. Keep Going.

I Write Because….

I now write with that sense of urgency to get what’s inside of me ….I write because I have learned from the mistakes and mishaps of others.

FullSizeRender (14)

I write because…hmmm…I don’t know (smile). I have never really given much thought to it. Maybe it’s because it’s in me and I love doing it! I’m at peace when I write. I write because maybe there’s a Focused sense of urgency. Throughout my life I remember my mom ‘writing‘ her book. Her story. She wrote in hardcover note books, pieces of paper, typewriter. Then years later she died with her story still inside.

I write because my sister too wanted to write her story. Ravished by cancer, she was hardly able to concentrate. A teacher by profession, she wrote in journals, in her phone, computer, anything she could get her hands on. Then as death drew near, she voiced her writings.

But for me as I reflect on this prompt, I now write with that sense of urgency to get what’s inside of me ….what I’m pregnant with… to give birth to the dreams, and thoughts of those who gave something deep inside of them, but wasn’t able to share. I write because I have learned from the mistakes and mishaps of others.

I gave my writing a push-start with my first common entrance exam for placement in high school back when I was only 10 years old. Even now I can remember clearly how much I enjoyed writing that short story; that essay. For me it didn’t seem like an exam. Staring at my past as I journeyed, this passion seemed to have followed me throughout life as a HR expert when I wrote policies. As a health administrator, I did all the writings for the medical practices, rummaging through those ceilings of state and federal business applications for practice management came so easy to me. Later, as I gleaned over my doctoral research, not only did I write my research but I published it my first book on Success Strategies.

With renewed zest, I now write not only for enjoyment but to encourage others that they too can accomplish whatever they want to achieve in life. I envision a world where everyone can be successful, however they define it…., whatever ‘it’ means to them. That my dear readers is why I write.

Thank you WordPress team for refining my skills to my audience. One love!

Cheers!
