Islands in the Sun…

The vibes; the rythms; the mystic music enthuse our frame of mind and instigate thoughts that Quiets our souls in distant love. Island… creates the feeling of contentment that all is well. No matter how busy life gets, an island waits in the distance to soothe our longings.

Why not plan a getaway to any of the caribbean islands – Jamaica, Trinidad, Bahamas, Cayman, and more. Listen…can you not hear it? They are a Calling with promises of lazy days basking in the sun, sea and sand.

One Love…

Survive. Mourn. Rebuild

img_5132
Tears in the night..awaken to the voice of the weather forecaster’s prediction of “Lots of sunshine; everything remains calm”. Calm I say? Calm? How can everything be calm?

Only a day before terror skirted the environs of the happiest place on earth…Orlando. A place now scarred by the insane. A place now recorded as the deadliest nightmare in U.S. History.

Tis sad. Questions reign. How? What? Why?

Mourn we must. But then after, we must take courage and turn our questions into acts of Valor. Acts of strength to survive. Acts of boldness, togetherness. Only then will we be able to dispel fear. Together we move forward. Together we rebuild.

The Scene…The Silence

Sitting, observing nature’s sound at play. The outdoors quiet, peaceful, calm

Kids playing

Nature responding

The canal flowing..slowly moving gently in the wind

Light breeze

Trees swaying

Dark clouds…Will it rain?

Squirrels climbing trees
Lizards missing

Dog running

All seems happy. Curious . Excited.

A Piece of Work

I bought this piece of artwork in Mombasa, Kenya, East Africa during a visit. I have loved the piece ever since. It’s very simple. Didn’t break the bank but for some reason I like it a lot. I guess maybe it’s due to its simplicity.

Looking at it it tells a story that can be interpreted however I like. I could critique their dress. I could ponder what they’re talking about? Are they preparing for a fight? Going hunting? Or simply learning from each other?

No matter what, the simplicity of this photo sparks my interest. Not only that, but it also is a reminder of a trip to a beautiful land. The land of Roots.

Disconnected: Writing, Not Writing

IMG_4996

A workaholic, insatiable learner, and serial volunteer. That’s what I do when I’m not writing. I volunteer in activities that contribute to the growth and personal development of individuals. My passion is connected to my vision to see a world where individuals can become successful, however they define it. So I invest the time to speak with individuals and groups throughout the local, national, and international community. Totally satisfying!

In search of being refreshed, I recharge through family play and engaging in the world of film. I hunger for movies. Drama, sci-fi, action, comedy, love…, it doesn’t matter, it all works! It reboots my mind. And when it’s done, I’m able to return to my past-time,  to write.

Here ends my tale of writing, and not writing.

Learning: Social …Inspires

I commit to remain open to the globe’s amazing secrets that can only be discovered through reading, writing, and exploring.

You study, study, study, and at the end, you are lucky enough to discover the greatest gift of education: that you know nothing at all. -EJ Koh.

Knowing nothing at all. That has been my experience. Armed with more than one Masters, one Bachelors degree, and even a Doctorate; I have concluded that the more I learn, the more there is yet to learn. Never-the-less, I commit to remain open to the globe’s amazing secrets that can only be discovered through reading, writing, and exploring.

Blank Stare of Memories

FullSizeRender (13)

Some days I just sit quietly and reflect. Life evolves, but the more I stare blankly into the distance, I become certain that the more things change, the more they remain the same. So the conclusion is to do what we can to help another person survive, thrive and succeed life’s evolving chain. To bask in the memories of those who sacrificed for us and more.

While so engaged, let the words of Dionne Warwick’s song ring….

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That’s what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I’ll be on your side forever more
That’s what friends are for…
Keep smiling.One Love

Dance means different things to different people. Enjoy the peace, quiet, and solitude at sunrise with birds dancing in sync. That’s my dance. What’s yours?

Legacy: What’s Love Got to do with it?

Some stories must be told. It was the spring of 2003, after experiencing discomfort and a series of medical tests, the news was relayed to her…my little 30-year-old sister. Not only did they find a lump in her breast but it was also malignant. Visits to Specialists left her with two options; remove the breast, or embark on a series of chemo treatment. The option of removal was an uncommon feat at the time, so after engaging family, friends and mountains of prayers, she made the decision to save the breast, and embrace the chemo treatment. A decision she never regretted.

After many bouts of treatment, combined with the usual side effects of hair loss, nervous system changes including numbness, weak feelings, and more…she lost the fight. A fight that lasted over 12 years. She fought to survive for her children. To see them live beyond their childhood years.

I write this not to seek sympathy but to share the innate character of my sister—Carleen, a stalwart! A fighter! A survivor extraordinaire! A teacher by profession, she spent her years in New York, Florida, and the Caribbean educational systems molding the minds of countless youths. Many were overwhelmed by the genuine care and concern she showed for her students, most of whom she brought from non-or-minimal performance to the realms of exceeded expectations.

Today, I choose to celebrate and recognize the life of my sister—Elaine, AKA Carleen. Today, I choose to celebrate the character and personal attributes of someone who has made a difference in the lives of many. Carleen, our family remembers you. We love you! We salute you! What’s love got to do with it? Everything! Your legacy lives on.

What I Didn’t Do: Letter to My Daughter

We are stepping into a New Year! As always it is a time to reflect on the past where we have come, and the journey ahead. This year I didn’t get to do a lot of things I wanted to, but I experienced something new. I ventured into new territory and published my research on leaders and how they attained success! My book titled Success Strategies of Caribbean American Leaders in the United States is now available on Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and other sites. Can you believe it?

I am most excited because I started something that I believed in, persisted, and have completed it! I learnt a lot during the process.

This is my desire for you. To go after your dreams. No matter what it is—just simply Dream! Big or small! When you accomplish it, the feeling is exhilarating! As we approach the New Year, spend some time defining what Success means to you. What will it look like? How will you know when you have achieved it? Just Dream. But like I have always said, after you dream then you have to work that dream. Put the plans in place then step out and do what you must to make it real.

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy….no way am I saying that. But the most important thing is to persist. Never give up. When the going gets rough, have something or someone, (maybe a mentor), that will encourage you to keep going. You know I’m always here for you and anyone else that needs encouragement to achieve. I learnt this in my many years managing people. That’s what I do best. It brings me great joy watching people achieve their best potential…moreso you.

So darling, Dream big! Then step forward in faith! You will achieve Success if you never give up!
