Workplace Trends

flexible work

In a major survey with human resource executives, managers, and more Forbes Magazine writer Dan Schawbel predicts 10 workplace trends expected in 2016. These are based on companies doing more with fewer resources in the midst of advances in technology and security issues arising as a result. Some challenges include the war for talent, adapting to change, and the need for workforce training. Compare and Contrast these trends and check your industry knowledge, and readiness.

  1. The acceptance of boomerang employees and the challenges for job seekers.
  2. The leadership gap will start being filled as boomers retire in numbers.
  3. Workplace flexibility becomes the biggest topic of conversation. Includes employees being reachable outside of office hours on their personal time. Work week up from 40 to 47 hours.
  4. Wearable technology (e.g. Apple watch, Fitbit) is being taken more seriously and disrupts business as usual. Wearables take advantage of our 24/7 business environment and helps workers retrieve information and be more efficient.
  5. Companies get serious about office design and use it as a way to increase collaboration and attract top talent.
  6. Obamacare takes full effect, causing premiums to surge and companies to pass more costs to employees. In order to remain profitable, companies will have to hire freelancers and remove some or all full-time workers.
  7. Companies figure out how to automate more jobs and modernize their workplaces at the cost of employees. But new jobs will be created.
  8. The first group of Generation Z will enter the workforce. They will choose work-life balance over salary, and will be seen more connected through technology.
  9. More professionals seek gigs instead of full-time jobs as the sharing and freelance market place expand.
  10. Maternity leave becomes bigger discussion as employee benefit

BLOGGING 101

I began this blog a few years ago but have hardly been consistent. As an individual in the business of Human Resource Management, and organizational leadership, my passion lies in the development of entrepreneurs, youths and individuals in transition. For that reason, I conducted a study for my dissertation on Success Strategies and decided to publish it recently in my book titled “Success Strategies of Caribbean-American Leaders in the United States”. In the book I sought to answer the question Why Some Individuals Succeed, While Others Don’t.  It is now available on http://www.amazon.com, and http://www.barnesandnoble.com.

I am still writing with the intention of publishing the Success Strategies Workbook, as well as another book titled “GreenLight: When God says Go”.  My intention here is to decide on what my audience prefers to hear, then focus this blog on that. This could be under the topics of leadership, success, inspiration, or lighter moments.

From participating in this new developing experience, I hope to be able to learn how to (1) improve this blog; (2) gain strong insights on how to advance; and (3) confidently connect with and grow followers.

Check out my blog https://successfulleaders.wordpress.com and I would most certainly welcome your comments and insights! Thank you.

What I Didn’t Do: Letter to My Daughter

We are stepping into a New Year! As always it is a time to reflect on the past where we have come, and the journey ahead. This year I didn’t get to do a lot of things I wanted to, but I experienced something new. I ventured into new territory and published my research on leaders and how they attained success! My book titled Success Strategies of Caribbean American Leaders in the United States is now available on Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and other sites. Can you believe it?

I am most excited because I started something that I believed in, persisted, and have completed it! I learnt a lot during the process.

This is my desire for you. To go after your dreams. No matter what it is—just simply Dream! Big or small! When you accomplish it, the feeling is exhilarating! As we approach the New Year, spend some time defining what Success means to you. What will it look like? How will you know when you have achieved it? Just Dream. But like I have always said, after you dream then you have to work that dream. Put the plans in place then step out and do what you must to make it real.

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy….no way am I saying that. But the most important thing is to persist. Never give up. When the going gets rough, have something or someone, (maybe a mentor), that will encourage you to keep going. You know I’m always here for you and anyone else that needs encouragement to achieve. I learnt this in my many years managing people. That’s what I do best. It brings me great joy watching people achieve their best potential…moreso you.

So darling, Dream big! Then step forward in faith! You will achieve Success if you never give up!

Knowing When It’s Time

Mike started his business with three friends doing what he loves …Finance! From doing what he loved, he turned his business into a multi-million dollar company extending his interests into real estate. The business subsequently grew from three friends to over 100 employees across various locations. With this rapid growth came the challenges of employee confusion about polices and processes; pay inequity; and more! Mike now begs for help from a Human Resource expert.

The Advantage of a HR Professional is to interpret specific employment laws. At its simplest level, if an employer has 15 Full Time employees it is covered by Title VII of the civil rights act; the American with Disabilities act (ADA) and the Genetic information nondiscrimination act (GINA). Expand to 20 Full-Time employees, the Age Discrimination in employment act (ADEA), and COBRA protections comes into play. Further growth to 50 Full Time employees, enter the Family & Medical leave act (FMLA).

This can be a lot for a growing small or medium sized business. It may not necessarily mean hiring a full time HR, but at least help from an external HR Consultant.

Signs that a business needs Human Resource help:

  • An inability to find workers needed in a timely fashion during the recruitment process;
  • Employee confusion about policies & processes;
  • Rising pay inequality issues that need to be addressed.

One bad hire can cost a company more than $50,000 p.a., not to mention the potential challenges with employee morale.

A good HR Professional can help reduce risk and streamline practices. A Cost benefit analysis will help to decide if the time is right for hiring HR support.

Don’t Wait! Gain Control of your Social Security Benefts

At a Legislative Conference at the White House on June 26, 2014, Stacy Rogers, Senior Adviser to the Acting Commissioner, SSA, encouraged Americans to gain control of their Social Security Benefits. She advised that Statements are no longer being mailed to individuals due to budgetary constraints.

Ms. Rogers encouraged individuals to set up their own Social Security account to get their social security statements. Waiting until retirement is far too late to contest records.

So be wise and visit http://www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount and create a ‘My Social Security’ account to get your Social Security Statement. Your statement provides:

* Estimates of your retirement, disability and survivors benefits

*Your earnings record

*The estimated social security and medicare taxes that you have paid.

So don’t wait! Go ahead and gain control of your Social Security benefits!
