Career On The Move…Job Relocation

img_8431

Moving! It’s one of the most stressful things to do! But moving for desired personal reasons including new job, new spouse (yikes!), education, and more makes the end result more gratifying! We get that Adrenalin rush because it’s something we desire. Packing those boxes, suitcases, and rummaging our belongings into trucks to go away , to Relocate…makes the journey worth the while (well at least through the honeymoon stage). I have done my fair share and have also helped many career transitioners relocate in my HR consulting role.

To make things easier, Tor Constantino shared five things to ask for when relocating for a job. These are:
1. Take a scouting trip.
Purpose: To see your new home environment of course! Look for permanent housing
    while you’re at it.
2. Ask About Temporary Housing
This helps offset the burden of security deposits, and helps in finding the best option for a more permanent home without the pressure.
3. Whole house pack and transport
Some companies provide this but it is cautioned to read the fine prints. Know what it
entails and by the way, some things are tax deductible. So save receipts for gas and more.
4. Storage of Home Goods.
Some transportation companies provide storage which can be an advantage until you find your ideal home.
5.Cash Stipend for Miscellaneous Expenses
And they do come in many forms, from airfares, car rental, family dislocation (some here, some there), and the like.
Moving! Relocation! It’s hard but sometimes it cannot be helped especially when the grass seems greener on the other side. Get organized! No need to be scared, it’s not such a bad thing.

Cheers!

God is Not Dead. No.

times pic

God is not dead. No.
The TIMES headline posed the question;  Is God Dead? The response plain and simple as many have said …

No, God is not dead.

The 1966 survey  shared that at the time 97 percent of Americans believed in God. Today, based on Gallup’s 2014 research, 64 per cent of Americans believe in His existence. Hence, the almost comical phrase, the “rise of the nones”. This basically refers to the many who have spiritual beliefs but choose not to be affiliated with a religion.

That said, as the beauty of nature’s grass is green, God provides the free will to do whatever us humans want to do. It is left up to us to choose. With this free will, individuals make bad choices. Let’s consider convicted criminals. Give them the freedom to choose whether to stay locked up and imprisoned, or to roam the streets. Which do you think they would choose? One can bet that 9 out of 10 criminals would choose the latter. Society is then left to deal with the devastating consequences of mayhem in our society.

So back to the question, is God dead? My answer is No. What are your thoughts?

Fearless! Greatness!

What if I fall? Oh but my darling, what if you fly?

Fear has crippled many. Often our dreams, goals, aspirations, and desires remain stuck by the realities of life. Yes, they may be valid concerns but it’s when we step out in spite of our fears that we achieve great things.

JUST DO IT!

What if I fall? Oh but my darling, what if you fly?

Fear has crippled many. Often our dreams, goals, aspirations, and desires remain stuck by the realities of life. Yes, they may be valid concerns but it’s when we step out in spite of our fears that we achieve great things. Years ago I decided to do a tandem jump-16,000 ft in the air! Boy was I afraid! But I did it anyway. I have always encouraged my girls to be Brave. To step out inspite of their fears. I encourage them to feel the fear but do it anyway. And despite my apprehension…, despite my fear…, I jumped! and I survived with the lasting memory to feel the fear but do it anyway. That’s how I approach my life goals.

Here are a few quotes from people who have achieved great things from different walks of life. My hope is that it will encourage someone today to step out in faith and achieve your dream, your hopes, your aspirations. Go ahead, Express yourself

Hiring and Dating…The Similarities

hired
Tall, dark, and handsome was he. A sports enthusiast who was popular with everyone. As his interest and approach grew, she was smitten and fell head over heels in love. She left her quiet, loyal, and committed guy for one who was more outgoing, adventurous and fun to be around. Sadly, she looked at the outward appearance but not the heart. Needless to say, as time flew by, so did his interest. He was more of a heartache to be around since his fun loving ways attracted other fun loving pursuers. The rest is history.

This too is true of the hiring process.

Needless to say as time flew by, so did his interest. He was more of a heartache to be around since his fun loving ways attracted other fun loving pursuers. The rest is history.

This too is true of the hiring process. At the outset employers look for those people who are outgoing, people with great resumes filled with the right keywords, and people who excel at interviewing. Minimized are the introverts who require more effort to get the value they are sure to bring at the right price, but difficult to unearth during the recruitment process. So at last after a lengthy process through the maze of online and mobile devices we find just the right one!

But hey… how can we keep ’em? Here are a few Retention tips compiled to help you.

  1. Track Retention. It has been said that if you’re not measuring then you’re practicing. Find out which line managers are doing well and which are not, then you will not know who needs coaching.
  2. Train Frontline Supervisors. People leave managers, not jobs. Train managers to have regular meetings to communicate employee expectations. Spend time with strong performers as well as low performers. Do not punish either group at the expense of the other.
  3. Hire the Right People the first time. Pay close attention to facets like integrity, attitude and integrity amongst other things like qualification, skills and experience. Together these things lead to retention.
  4. Offer Employees More Recognition, Responsibility, and Pay. Be creative. Find ways to recognize employees who meet goals. Experiencing budgetary constraints? Ask your connections to provide VIP tickets to special events or offer discounts at local stores. Also, never underestimate the power of a simple thank you or a well-done note which works wonders. Keep a close tab on industry compensation standards (performance bonus and benefits included).
  5. Find ways to increase Flexibility in Working Conditions. Offer flexible work schedules. Ensure employees are prepared to do what their job requires (e.g. travel, late nights, vacations, and more). Note that overly rigid work rules drive away workers.
  6. Create that Work/Life Balance. Train leaders how to handle workers in stressful positions.
  7. Develop the Right Culture. Create an environment that attracts the right employees. Your company culture should match the type of employee you want to employ, whether you opt for a by-the-book, strict workplace or a more casual, laid-back atmosphere.  Provide a comfortable work environment and culture. Ensure sufficient training, and support new hires until they are able to function on their own.
  8. Let Employees Participate in your Business Planning Process. Bring your team together when experiencing business growth, or changes in the industry. Have Brainstorming meetings to create strategies for new goals and objectives monthly, quarterly, annually and so on. Ask them to come up with 1-2 suggestions in a group or individually. This encourages them to feel important and valued. Most important—it fuels retention!
  9. Use contests and incentives to help keep workers motivated and feel rewarded. These programs can keep employees focused, boosts morale, and makes them excited about their jobs!
  10. Consider hiring a Human Resources Expert if your company has 15-50 employees.

Never Give up the Fight…

perception

As a young girl growing up, I never liked to listen to the legendary Bob Marley. But as I grew older and matured, I realized that his music dealt with a lot of issues. Issues that plague our society every day. I have often been conscious of my perception of things. I have learnt that things are not always what they appear to be. Often, we must question whether our perception is actually the reality. At times they are not. And just imagine how much heartache and pain we could avoid if we were to look beyond what seems apparent.  Let us be mindful that things are not always what they appear to be. Let’s learn to never give up the fight of enduring to the end to achieve our goals, dreams, passion, and desires.

As we peruse Bob Marley’s lyrics to ‘Never Give up the Fight’, do contemplate…have our perception ever been wrong?

Get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight

Preacher man don’t tell me heaven is under the earth
I know you don’t know what life is really worth
Is not all that glitters in gold and
Half the story has never been told
So now you see the light, aay
Stand up for your right. Come on

Get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight
(Repeat)

Most people think great God will come from the sky
Take away ev’rything, and make ev’rybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You would look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your right, yeah!

Get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight
Get up, stand up. Life is your right
So we can’t give up the fight
Stand up for your right, Lord, Lord
Get up, stand up. Keep on struggling on
Don’t give up the fight

We’re sick and tired of your ism and skism game
Die and go to heaven in Jesus’ name, Lord
We know when we understand
Almighty God is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you can’t fool all the people all the time
So now we see the light
We gonna stand up for our right

So you’d better get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight
Get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight

Legacy: What’s Love Got to do with it?

cherry blossom pic

Some stories must be told. It was the spring of 2003, after experiencing discomfort and a series of medical tests, the news was relayed to her…my little 30-year-old sister. Not only did they find a lump in her breast but it was also malignant. Visits to Specialists left her with two options; remove the breast, or embark on a series of chemo treatment. The option of removal was an uncommon feat at the time, so after engaging family, friends and mountains of prayers, she made the decision to save the breast, and embrace the chemo treatment. A decision she never regretted.

After many bouts of treatment, combined with the usual side effects of hair loss, nervous system changes including numbness, weak feelings, and more…she lost the fight. A fight that lasted over 12 years. She fought to survive for her children. To see them live beyond their childhood years.

I write this not to seek sympathy but to share the innate character of my sister—Carleen, a stalwart! A fighter! A survivor extraordinaire! A teacher by profession, she spent her years in New York, Florida, and the Caribbean educational systems molding the minds of countless youths. Many were overwhelmed by the genuine care and concern she showed for her students, most of whom she brought from non-or-minimal performance to the realms of exceeded expectations.

Today, I choose to celebrate and recognize the life of my sister—Elaine, AKA Carleen. Today, I choose to celebrate the character and personal attributes of someone who has made a difference in the lives of many. Carleen, our family remembers you. We love you! We salute you! What’s love got to do with it? Everything! Your legacy lives on.

Workplace Trends

flexible work

In a major survey with human resource executives, managers, and more Forbes Magazine writer Dan Schawbel predicts 10 workplace trends expected in 2016. These are based on companies doing more with fewer resources in the midst of advances in technology and security issues arising as a result. Some challenges include the war for talent, adapting to change, and the need for workforce training. Compare and Contrast these trends and check your industry knowledge, and readiness.

  1. The acceptance of boomerang employees and the challenges for job seekers.
  2. The leadership gap will start being filled as boomers retire in numbers.
  3. Workplace flexibility becomes the biggest topic of conversation. Includes employees being reachable outside of office hours on their personal time. Work week up from 40 to 47 hours.
  4. Wearable technology (e.g. Apple watch, Fitbit) is being taken more seriously and disrupts business as usual. Wearables take advantage of our 24/7 business environment and helps workers retrieve information and be more efficient.
  5. Companies get serious about office design and use it as a way to increase collaboration and attract top talent.
  6. Obamacare takes full effect, causing premiums to surge and companies to pass more costs to employees. In order to remain profitable, companies will have to hire freelancers and remove some or all full-time workers.
  7. Companies figure out how to automate more jobs and modernize their workplaces at the cost of employees. But new jobs will be created.
  8. The first group of Generation Z will enter the workforce. They will choose work-life balance over salary, and will be seen more connected through technology.
  9. More professionals seek gigs instead of full-time jobs as the sharing and freelance market place expand.
  10. Maternity leave becomes bigger discussion as employee benefit
