Refocus: Your Brand. Their View…

You have made up your mind about where you want to go and what you want to do. Now what? It’s time to set Sail. Take a look at what others will see when they start searching for you. How is your CV/Resume? When was the last time you looked at it? By the way, your Resume should be kept current every time you make a change on the job in terms of your achievement. It should be added. Don’t wait until years later you start scrambling to find what did I do again? What are the gaps between the Dash?

What about your public profiles? Do you have a LinkedIn profile? Is it a ghost (i.e. no picture); does it reflect where you want to be? Or is it depicting some Plucked career you did back when you just started working years ago? What about Facebook? It’s where most headhunters go to look to find out about you before they even connect with you. What are their likes? Dislikes? What activities are you involved in? We can sell ourselves in an interview but when doing a public search, what will they find? Make sure their search comes up with what you want them to know about you.

What have I done? This is crazy!

New job offer. Relocation. Tons of change. Excitement in the midst of fear.  But it comes with the territory. Getting up and going to another land…faraway. Giving up the familiar is no Snack. It is scary… but when we do it, we learn new things about ourselves and about others.

Have you ever watched HGTV’s House Hunters International? Well if you have, you would know that those who take on moving from one country to the next have brave hearts. They give up jobs, family, friends, and often wish they could take their home culture with them. Often they must give up a lot. China! New Zealand! Paris! Japan! The Caribbean! and more for those fascinating new ventures!

We often say we want a change yet we want to hold onto the familiar. It’s normal. In my early career managing international HR, I had the task of sending executives to relocate overseas. It intrigued me so much that I studied Cross Cultural Management. It was often a challenge for those who took the step. But those who embraced the host culture survived beyond the honeymoon stage. They became acclimated to the new culture filled with its languages, people, food, and new experiences.

But like anything else, it works if we stick with it. Naturally if you find yourself among those who don’t like the experience after you’ve done it, no problem. At least you can still say “I did it“!

Only the adventurous can gleefully say “what have I done? This is crazy!” with a smile and the satisfaction of new learnings, and exposure.

Cheers to the new adventurous you!

Jump! Bust The Fear…

Whatever it is…Bust the Fear!  A few years ago, I did something exciting, some may say crazy! I jumped 14,000 feet out of an airplane! Believe me I was really scared as the plane Ascended, but I did it anyway. I have always maintained, that we should do some things even when afraid. Follow fear and you talk yourself out of getting out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself, what do I have to lose? Where will I be this time next year if I don’t make that move? What steps do I need to take?

As I prepared to jump, I planned. I searched for a reputable company with a track record of safety and success. I completed paperwork, insurance and more. Then I stepped out and had the most wonderful experience as I did the tandem jump and floated in the air looking out on the horizon.

That was me. You must create that mindset. Have a Conversation. Ask yourself, what do I want to do? What are the steps I will need to take to get to my goal? Personally, I like vision boards. Like Magnet, they helped steer my way. For example, when studying we are often encouraged to look to graduation and put up that picture where you can see it every day, not Bury it. For me it was my research project. I was not interested in doing a research to place on a shelf at home. No. I wanted it to help others who wish to develop their leadership skills and become successful. So that’s exactly what I did. My research ended up being published in the Journal of American Academy of Business Cambridge (JAABC). It was also published in books, and I use the basis of my research and interest to encourage others through coaching. That’s my passion.

So, go ahead, bust out that fear! Develop that new mindset!

Travel For Business or Pleasure?

Traveling! It’s mind-blowing! It expands our thinking. It opens doors to things we never dreamed of. Often it comes with frustrating exasperations of missed flights, airport treks, trains, taxis, and more.

Why do you Travel?

Recently I’ve been traveling on business attending conferences, public forum and more that I’m involved in. But in spite of the busyness accompanied by lack of sleep, travel provides satisfaction. The food. The people. Culture. Hotels. Bed n breakfasts. But it all comes together to form an enriching experience that all would do well to Commit to experience.
Travel is not an Illusion. Live it, do it, learn.
Hats off to times of travel… no matter the reason.

Cheers!

Leader: Where Are You Now?

Being a leader is 24-7 job, and educational opportunities to improve yourself are everywhere. Learn from your friends and family and sometimes complete strangers, and you’ll find opportunities at every turn

 – Byron Scott and Charles Norris

Leader. Where are you now and where do you want to be? In the book Slam Dunk Success, Magic Johnson articulated in the Forward that most people think you win then you become a leader. But it’s the other way around. You’re a leader first, then you win.

Leaders are everywhere, and so are leadership opportunities. Punctured or not, Magic urged that you may be an entry-level employee or a middle manager, but not to worry. Every department is looking for a leader. To have the courage to stand up and take the lead, you will become successful.

Leadership is innate. Leaders are constantly changing the world around them. They may be involved in business or in the community. Opportunities abound.

Leadership is foresight. Manage yourself. Think of where you are now and where you want to be. Then take the steps ….one at a time. Try. Learn. Fail. Get back up and do it again. You will succeed with hard work and persistence. As always, don’t give up.

Cheers!

Advice: The New Grad’s Frontier…

Life’s Good! The future’s bright, beautiful, and inviting! New grads saunter excitedly about their achievement. With innocence, they smile, move, and they plan creatively. But as they take the next step, confusion appears often disparagingly. As they stare, the future becomes fearful…oblique.

Renowned author, speaker and coach Brian Tracy, asked his followers to share one piece of advice that they would give a new grad. Excitedly followers jumped in with voices that echoed Natty instructions galore:

  • Have a vision about the future that truly excites you, then go ahead and build skills, habits, and attitudes that will make your vision a reality. If you are ambitious, read Elon Musk: Tesla, Space and a Quest for Fantastic Future. Read a lot but never confuse reality and fantasizing. Don’t read when you have to be working or spend time on social media when you have to be doing the actual work.
  • First you Learn and after that remove ‘L’ from that (earn)
  • Be patient
  • Persistence, discipline, and dedication
  • Work harder than anyone else
  • Don’t get a career – build a life
  • Spend your time wisely. Never waste it
  • Always stay true to yourself
  • Don’t be afraid to fail, laugh it off and jump right back in again, do it when you can. Make comebacks easier. Timing.
  • Make sure to do what you really love to do
  • Stay disciplined. Never stop reading and exploring. Get up soon when you fall.
  • Believe in your ability even if you are the only one who does
  • Keep your debts LOW  and your savings rate HIGH. That way, should you find yourself in a job or situation tht you hate or have outgrown, you will have the resources/ability to move on. Always have an EXIT Plan and Exit Fund. Never settle
  • Be yourself, do your best, never give up
  • Do what it requires to achieve the goal but do it with good in mind
  • Understand emotional intelligence
  • Be authentic
  • Follow what you love. Do what you love
  • Observe. Absorb. Ask quality questions. At the end of the day, self-evauate. Devote your mornings to listen to Brian Tracy and other motivational audios. Then apply
  • Read books
  • Be intentionally clear
  • Patience
  • Know what you want
  • Start and don’t quit
  • Never ever OVER PROMISE then under deliver
  • Learn to plan
  • Show up

Great advice for grads and even those of us who have moved ahead with years of experience. There’s always opportunity for change. To recoup, to pick up the pieces, and begin or get on track again.

Any advice missing that you could add?

Cheers!

What If I Can’t Do It?…

I smiled, then replied…”You can. You will”…

My daughter’s little 6-year-old said to me after his ceremony “what if I can’t do 1st grade work?” I smiled, then replied…”You can. You will. They will teach you“. But what if I don’t listen? Again, I smiled…

Aren’t we all like that lil 6 year old?  The world often seems bigger than us. We receive the new job, the new position, the contract, the opportunity, the leadership role, the marriage proposal, the news of the pregnancy…  We are thrilled! Over-joyed! But soon… as we reflect…, we begin to ponder…”can I do it?

My response is always – YES!  Brassy you! Yes you can do it! Often with new ventures or experiences, our goals seem insurmountable especially from a distance when we can’t see our way. We falter. We fuss. We’re afraid. These are all very normal but like I’ve always said, don’t let fear stop you. Don’t Blink. Make that bold move. Do it in Portions. Do it even when you’re afraid. Who knows? You may even Surprise yourself!

Cheers!
