A Moment Of Weakness… Ain’t No Lollipop..

A moment of weakness. Devastating consequences.

A father was seen hitting his son. Onlookers called the cops. The rest is as we know it. The father was barred from seeing his son in order to protect the child’s perceived safety. This despite cries from his wife and others that he is a great dad.

A drink or two at a party, then getting behind the wheels to drive home. Impaired… it’s called.   Driving under the influence impairs our ability to function well. Accidents happen causing injuries; sometimes fatalities.

A moment of weakness. Enrollment in college goes asunder. Future’s impacted as dropout rate catapults.

A moment of weakness. The common intimacy. Resulting consequences…unwanted pregnancy. Abortion. Sadness. Childbirth without care. Impacts negatively on relationships, marriages…, divorce ensues.

A moment of weakness often impacts goals. Maintain focus. Develop the ability to say No. No to the drink. No to the advance. No to the things that distracts, and painstakingly drags you off  the direct path toward your goals.

A moment of weakness. Think before you act. Aint no Lollipop.

Stay strong.

What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?

Just Do it. Avoid Any Disastrous Consequences

Goals: What’s Holding You Back?

I met Daisy Ferguson at a Writers Group event. She shared how she wrote her first book after being afraid to meet an almost Edible request at age 86. She published it at age 88. Now she’s onto finishing her 2nd book at age 90! Indeed no small feat!

What Excuse do you have for not achieving your Goal?

Goals: When Things Converge…

What are you afraid of? Go ahead, do it now….even when you’re afraid. You never know…

Convergence is the merging of distinct technologies, industries, or devices into a unified whole

Illiana awoke with a start. She is going to do it! Moxied, she grabbed the phone and courageously spoke with her former part-time boss, John. For months she has been thinking about her internship but was paranoid that she would be turned down.

This time luck was on her side! A past associate and colleague recently connected with John for an opportunity but he didn’t have the time to assist. But he promised he would think about it. Now here was his chance… Illiana had all the time in the world to dedicate to this project for a full year of internship!

Amazing! Totally supernatural! Savor it! When faith works, everything converge.

What are you afraid of? Go ahead, do it now….even when you’re afraid. You never know… it may converge with another person’s dream.

Ever had ‘converging’ experience? Do share.

The Grit. The Grind. The Search…

Remember the saying, if you don’t know where you want to go, any road will take you there. So, if you’re not sure, take an assessment. Stop. Don’t turn up your nose. Find one. Answer the questions correctly and it will reveal different occupations and/or direction you can take to get you on your path of interest. For example, if you Caper and like helping people, you might be suitable to become a health professional. Look at the qualifications needed.

The Grit. The Grind. The Search. Consider all your options then select one and take the necessary steps to get you where you want to go.

If you are already on the path; know where you want to go, and have the qualifications, then start your search. Look on different job search medium. Find out the salary paid, what the job fully entails, then apply.

But first! Make sure that resume is up to par. If you’re in the creative industry make sure you start a website or blog to show your work. Some employers won’t even consider you if you are not able to show samples of your work. So, find a home online (i.e. your website) and get active.

Next, write that cover letter that will show that you have actually read what the job entails. I have been floored by people who have applied to jobs that I have advertised on LinkedIn and other medium and it shows that they have not even read the job requirements to see if they meet the criteria. Let me hasten to say that sometimes you really do not meet the criteria, but I will encourage you to still apply. Sell yourself through the cover letter. Show why you would be eligible for the job though you have no experience. Who knows you may still be hired because of your attitude! Because of your potential and initiative. Take the time to share how you would apply your current skills to the job.

Happy Searching!

The Bridge That Binds …

Central Business District, New Orleans

Often we underestimate the protection of traffic lights that play such an important role in our lives. It’s the Bridge that binds. Imagine …without them the mayhem that would ensue. We give thanks for the stop signs in our life that provide a chance to reflect then move forward.

WWII Museum, New Orleans

In the distance is the Bridge that connects one place to the next. Without it, our lives would remain a path of lengthy steps from one place to the next. Awww the bridges that bind. Soooo worth it!

Your Descript Tethered Life …

A sprint. A jog. A run. A walk. I sat on a bench in the park stretching. I watched health and fitness enthusiasts do what they love. I stretched more, then reflected on life. Where are we now? The Tethered years fly by …up close slowly; looking back, it’s a flash. I then began scrolling, and there popped the question from a social media forum:

Describe Your Life in ONE Word

Curious, I scrolled through the list of responses. Some were positive, some nonchalant, while others were filled with a bask of the negatives. Here I share a few of the comments.

Surprising | Destined | Stuck | Perfect | Open Book | Confused | Determined | Focused | Blessed | Challenging | Change | Sucks | Fortunate | Tears | Observant | Destined | Surprising |  Progressive | Persistence |Purposeful | Growth | Making | Incredible | Awesome | Evolutionary | Adventurous | Meaningful | Beautiful

Does any of the above responses resonate with your life right now? Can you add any that’s missing? Feel free to share.

Refocus: Your Brand. Their View…

You have made up your mind about where you want to go and what you want to do. Now what? It’s time to set Sail. Take a look at what others will see when they start searching for you. How is your CV/Resume? When was the last time you looked at it? By the way, your Resume should be kept current every time you make a change on the job in terms of your achievement. It should be added. Don’t wait until years later you start scrambling to find what did I do again? What are the gaps between the Dash?

What about your public profiles? Do you have a LinkedIn profile? Is it a ghost (i.e. no picture); does it reflect where you want to be? Or is it depicting some Plucked career you did back when you just started working years ago? What about Facebook? It’s where most headhunters go to look to find out about you before they even connect with you. What are their likes? Dislikes? What activities are you involved in? We can sell ourselves in an interview but when doing a public search, what will they find? Make sure their search comes up with what you want them to know about you.

What Have I Done? This is Crazy!

What have I done? This is crazy!

New job offer. Relocation. Tons of change. Excitement in the midst of fear.  But it comes with the territory. Getting up and going to another land…faraway. Giving up the familiar is no Snack. It is scary… but when we do it, we learn new things about ourselves and about others.

Have you ever watched HGTV’s House Hunters International? Well if you have, you would know that those who take on moving from one country to the next have brave hearts. They give up jobs, family, friends, and often wish they could take their home culture with them. Often they must give up a lot. China! New Zealand! Paris! Japan! The Caribbean! and more for those fascinating new ventures!

We often say we want a change yet we want to hold onto the familiar. It’s normal. In my early career managing international HR, I had the task of sending executives to relocate overseas. It intrigued me so much that I studied Cross Cultural Management. It was often a challenge for those who took the step. But those who embraced the host culture survived beyond the honeymoon stage. They became acclimated to the new culture filled with its languages, people, food, and new experiences.

But like anything else, it works if we stick with it. Naturally if you find yourself among those who don’t like the experience after you’ve done it, no problem. At least you can still say “I did it“!

Only the adventurous can gleefully say “what have I done? This is crazy!” with a smile and the satisfaction of new learnings, and exposure.

Cheers to the new adventurous you!
