Someday I’ll …

Someday I’ll do this. Someday I’ll do that.

How many of us often sit or live at the ‘wishing well’ that someday I’ll do this, or that. Someday I’ll get that perfect body. I’ll have that perfect house, job, spouse, marriage with the perfect kids; go on that dream vacation, and much more! Oh if wishes were horses so many would ride.

Someday is Today

Why not let someday be today. I reflect on the movie Hidden Figures where each of the three women at NASA — Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into space.

The inaugural team at NASA decided to step out and do something that was never done before. From the astronaut, NASA’s president, the judge, and naturally the women. They all stepped out and did something different. And guess what? It worked! Their efforts changed the world (well outer space– orbit)!

Start Here. Start Now

Why not let your someday be today? Start here, start now. Step out. Go do that thing that you’ve always dreamed of. Become an entrepreneur! Write that book! Enrol in that course! Start that blog! Take that vacation! Leave that stressful job! You are Capable. You never know what’s out there unless you try.

May your someday be today.

Cheers!

To Move Ahead I value your help.

At the start of 2016 I decided to take the plunge into a Blog Renewal. I started my blog back in 2011 with only a few posts a year. My goal sparked, I decided to enroll in wordpress university. Now looking back it’s one of the best decisions I made. I became fully conversant with managing my blog and sharing my thoughts on success, goals, personal development, writing, and more. Even though there is a ton more to learn, I am pleased with my achievement this year.

To you my readers I say THANKS! Thank you for following me. Thank you for participating through your valuable insights. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

As we step into a new year and a fresh chapter in our lives my desire remains to inspire because I have been inspired.  Will you help me in sharing your preference on topics I should write about? What would you like to hear more of? I truly value your input and insights.

Moods ‘n’ Pills: Truth or Dare…

Mood: A temporary state of mind or feeling

A well known executive was overcome with emotion and challenges associated with business scrutiny from authorities, succumbed to an overdose. Celebrities mix pills n potions (Niki Minaj), and too often succumb to overdose intentionally or unintentionally mixing alcohol or prescription drugs. But before we jump to criticize, let’s be cautioned… this can happen to a beloved family member too. It’s all in how it’s handled.

Mood is a temporary state of mind or feeling. Emphasis on the word ‘temporary‘. Often we get memorized with the sense that our mood, our situation will last forever. We are blinded and can’t see the road ahead…the future. We become blinded by the challenges of the here and now.

Moody

Being Moody isn’t always an easy pill to swallow for those close to dealing with it.When the problems come and some feel that they cannot handle it, some choose to take a pill out. To sleep, to dream, to make it all go away. But taking a pill out has never solved any problem… it is only a way of diverting the problem from where it is for a short period of time. The solution is in what we do as a direct confrontation to the problem and through finding the means to confront the issue.

Is it sickness? Call a doctor. Is it financial ? Get a job, change your job, or add a part-time gig. Is it business, or relationship on the job or at home? Find a coach. Talk about it to find a solution. If all else fails move on. Your life and sanity is more important.

Today remember life is a journey that comes with highs and lows. When the lows hit as they will, plan for it. Know where to turn to get the help you need to ride the waves. Relax Life’s journey was never meant to ride alone.

Cheers!

On 2nd Thoughts: Leadership & Power

If you build it, will they come?

Leadership as the ability to cause other persons to act in desired ways for the benefit of the organization or group

As the citizens of the United States prepare for the passing of the baton to another President, it might be worth it to pause and reflect on leadership and power. Many are having Second Thoughts about what to do to influence the passing of the baton to another incumbent.

For that matter, our reflections turn to consider what is leadership? What is power? How can leaders positively influence the action of others? Is there a right way? Is there a wrong way? Does it differ at the worldwide level from that of the organizational and individual levels? These questions have tugged at my mind as I contemplated the sources of power and sought to identify individuals in organizations who exemplify these attributes.

Leading Leaders

img_6367

Selacuse in his book “Leading Leaders” discussed the category of powerful people whom he defined as the ‘elites’. Despite the natural negative connotation derived from this term, these are individuals who have “more” – more education, more talent, more money and more clout than ordinary people. Their knowledge, skills, money or power give elites (customarily leaders) special privileges.

A Bushy Comparison

Persuasion before action

Moreso Selacuse defined leadership as the ability to cause other persons to act in desired ways for the benefit of the organization or group.  He conveyed an interesting spin on contrasting leadership at the presidential level. A comparative analysis was done on the leadership style of President George H.W. Bush with the leadership of his son President George W. Bush.  Father Bush strongly believed that if other nations were to join the coalition to drive Iraq from Kuwait, the United States had to take an active, energetic leadership role in convincing them to join the coalition.  He believed that leadership required diplomacy across a broad front and exhibited this through direct contact with other world leaders.  Moreover, he did this through diplomatic missions; through action at the United Nations and other international organizations; through foreign embassies in the United States; and through American ambassadors abroad – to build and maintain a coalition of nations united in their efforts to achieve the goal to drive Iraq from Kuwait.  George H.W. Bush’s leadership was based on persuasion before action.

If you build it will they come?

In contrast to his leadership style, his son George W. Bush acted under the belief that other countries had no choice but to follow the United States.  George W. Bush and his administration believed that leadership by the United States seemed to flow automatically from its status as the world’s only superpower.  At the time, the administration made it publicly clear that if other countries did not follow the U.S. into the war against Iraq, they would go to war alone.  That certainly deviated from the importance of creating a coalition.  They believed that unilateral action by the U.S. would naturally lead to multilateral action by other countries.  The “if you build it they will come” doctrine expressed the belief that the United States was a unique country not just in terms of its power but also its moral authority for using that power.

To summarize this comparative analysis, Bush – the father, had broad experience in international diplomacy and long-standing relationships with world leaders at that time. He intimately knew and was on a first-name basis with national leaders and used this to his advantage to influence worldwide leaders.  On the other hand, his son had no previous diplomatic experience and did not know the foreign leaders.  Therefore, he often delegated important tasks to other members of his administration. Naturally then, he did not have the influence that his father did.  In my opinion, this was indeed an interesting view on the issue of leadership and power at the global nation-wide level.

Definitely something to consider as we step into the future of our country, organizations or at the individual level of leadership, power and success.

Choose wisely.

Total Eclipse Of The…

That moment when you realize that “‘ahh yessss, I have done it!”

Total eclipse of the…. When we hear this phrase we often think of the heart, or the moon’s eclipse of the earth. That’s natural. But I’d like to think of eclipse as the collusion of goals, dreams, and aspirations with final achievement. That moment when you realize that “‘ahh yessss, I have done it!”So satisfying.

The photograph depicts the dream of photographer Colleen Pinski who travelled hundreds of miles from her home in Colorado to capture this dream picture. Her eclipse moment indeed.

When was your last Eclipse?

Beneath The Surface…

img_5945

What we don’t see….CAN hurt. Violence, anger, strife, held beneath the surface can cause harm.  Such harm often leads to hurt, fear, pain that maim, and even ultimate death.

Look around. This has been on the rise. Happening often with the common comment “quiet person causes no harm”.

Silent River Runs Deep.

Silent River Runs Deep… is an old fable that seems to be  applicable these days.

Woke up to the news that a father shot his 2 kids then  turned the gun on himself. The feedback …”good parent, no signs of child abuse, always good father”. And there are many many more stories like this.

What’s going on?… is the common question.

Time for society to pull together. To work together within our communities to help. Signs. There are always signs. If only we see, if only our eyes are open. We’re now a society with heads down. Heads down in our phone. Heads down in virtuality, when the real world holds us as victims.

It’s time to raise our heads up. Open our eyes. Take a look at our neighbors, coworkers, friends, families; and at times our foes; our haters, our enemies. Let’s look; recognize the signals being sent. All around us there are signs.

Let’s not wait until it’s ….too late.

Water’s Rain

Raindrops. Soft, quiet, serene

Unlike the noises of thunderous terrains

Raindrops breathe life, love, play; in a stillness that comforts

All wrapped in covers so deep.

Waters pour; let it rain.
