Busy Is Good…

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.

George Bernard Shaw

Dr. Shelly's avatarSuccess Strategies

Busy is good. That’s my favorite response to entrepreneurs who express that they are busy.

You see, we have all been there when there is nothing to do. No job. No contract. No financial inflow. What frequently follows is sadness, apathy, boredom, inability to meet financial obligations and the list goes on. For sure that ain’t good for our mental state and wellbeing.

Among Others

An 80-year-old grandmother was busy going to the gym, church, shopping, Medical visits to the doctor. Those activities kept her busy. It made her feel alive. Then suddenly her husband also retired. Now they both sit at home watching golf, tennis, jeopardy and wheel of fortune on TV. This past weekend she spent time in the hospital. Latency had stepped in.

The Deal

That’s what happens when we are not busy. It happens to entrepreneurs, workers, student or retirees. There’s no respect of persons.

Why People Accept Jobs: 9 Reasons…

Is Your Organization Selling what employees want to buy? The question Gallup posed most certainly creates a pause for both the employer who is searching for top talent and the job hunter who comes with his or her own fair share of what they will or will not accept.

9 Reasons Employees Accept Job Offers

Here are a few things that top talent seek in their next career move:

  1. Great Pay and Benefits (duh)
  2. Environments that are respectful, diverse and inclusive
  3. Great Cultural fit to bolster a sense of belonging
  4. Work in a location that is safe, easily accessible, and aesthetically pleasing
  5. The desire for flexibility –remote or hybrid work
  6. Work/ Life balance. Fast disappearing are those days of long working hours that when they get home they are no use to family or themselves
  7. Financial Stability. People want to work where they don’t have to worry about the business viability as well as their own ability to cover expenses and save for their future
  8. To work with great people (stress-free) and build key relationship with others in the industry
  9. The ability to learn and grow that fosters self-actualization

If you are providing these things as an organization, you are well on your way to attracting and retaining top talent. Seeing gaps? Lets connect to get you you started on the road to improvement.

Likewise, as you reflect on the 9 reasons, what stands out to you? Is there anything you would like to add? Do share. We would love to hear.

Cheers!

What Does Success Mean To You?

Dr. Shelly's avatarSuccess Strategies

Get an education. Become a lawyer, doctor, get a cool career! Marry Prince/Princess Charming. Buy that nice big house. Have the perfect kids. These are some of the wishes that moms and dads often want for their children to Jolt them to success or to Restart. But I have always stressed that you should not let anyone define what success means to you. It’s entirely your decision.

Brian Tracy asked the question “What Does Success Mean to You?” Responses came in Opaque forms including:

  • Doing what I want when I want and helping others so that they can to help themselves
  • The highest level of success is happiness
  • Do the right thing and be a great person or human being
  • Not caring if it is Monday or Friday. Loving every day of the week the same. Having a good relationship with people. Making a difference. Continuously learning and…

When Everything Stops…

Life ends when you stop dreaming, hope ends when you stop believing and love ends when you stop caring

Unknown

When everything stops, or should I say…when everything should stop. More than a decade ago I lost my grandmother-the matriarch of our family. Cancer had returned in her three score and ten years. It didn’t stop her from being who she was…the be-all-and-end-all of our lives. But then one day the bank manager where I worked called me into her office, sat me down and told me the hospital had called. My grandmother was gone.

Perturbed, I looked around. Customers were still in the bank walking around doing their daily business. I could not understand. For me everything had stopped.

I reflect on what’s happening around the world. Threats and bombs going off explosively. Yet elsewhere, people go about their business as usual, posting on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. It begs the question…is there a bridge? Do we care? Yep, many really do care. Benevolence saturates the heart and for sure, with gas prices skyrocketing, the world will start feeling the effects.

So let’s not give up hope because fear stops life and love ends when we stop caring.

Thoughts? Do share. We would love to hear.

Cheers!

Books And Legacy…

Books are my legacy. They live on. ~Dr. Shelly C

Books are my legacy. I began my journey to leave a legacy for my two girls and their offspring-future generations. Non-fiction, that’s mainly what I write. I researched the topics of Success and leadership so that those in my circle of influence will be able to define success for themselves. The goal being to design their own paths to achieve.

The Quest To Drive Their Legacy

Fast forward a few years, I have been asked by the aspiring ones to help steer their writings to become authors. This I gladly accepted as an additional way to leave a legacy, through others, as they too leave a trail. From poetry, memoirs, children’s books and more. It’s been a pleasure to do.

As my heartfelt quest says, Books are my legacy. They live on.

What’s your legacy? Do share, we would love to hear.

Cheers!

A Time Of Fearlessness…

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Kara Barnett’s TEDx talk was intriguing. She spoke about combating the imposter syndrome. But personally because of who I am, I captured her talk focusing more on the Fear we feel. This is more so because I constantly speak to you–my audience about fear.

Fear detracts. Fear retards. Fear keeps us stuck from achieving our goals, dreams and aspirations. This can be professional or social.

Grab coffee or a glass of wine and listen into this brief TEDx talk as Kara discussed the things that are important to becoming more bold.

Now that you watched it, what did you glean? Do share, we would love to hear.

Cheers!

Strive and Reach for what you can Achieve

My eyes caught the attention of an article titled “Giving up”. It quickly sparked my interest because I usually steer away from ever giving up. In my youth I did track, and for all those athletes out there, you know just how much effort it takes to get in shape. To stick to your goal. To become fit and ready for that race. As I advanced into maturity, the same held true for me. It became the very grain of my existence. During college, and career advancement, I never gave up. Now as a consultant and coach, I Mentor and encourage entrepreneurs, managers, and employees, to stick to their goals, dreams, and aspirations.

That article reminded me of another I had read about success and fear. Both fear and the desire to give up intertwine and cripple us, often fueling negative…
