Getaway! It’s Elastic!

Travelers are never disappointed. To get there, they journeyed by cruise, plane, taxis and foot. Every moment of planning the trip was filled with beautiful excitement, longing, and delightful Elastic dreams

A year ago my daughter and her husband came up with the Genius idea to go on their dream vacation to the beautiful and historic Greece. The country prides itself in the wonders of joy, and rich history. Travelers are never disappointed.

To get there, they journeyed by cruise, plane, taxis and foot. Every moment of planning the trip was filled with beautiful excitement, longing, and delightful Elastic dreams of what was to come. And when the day finally came, it didn’t disappoint. They had a wonderful time! 10 days exploring the mountains, valleys, monuments, eateries, and more.

Then the day came for their departure. Filled with pics, souvenir, and memories to last a lifetime. Suddenly…without notice, things changed.

Unrest erupted in Turkey. Airports closed. Luggage on flights that were terminated. No way out from Athens. Flights cancelled, they had to seek alternate accommodation at nearby hotels. Yet no sleep. Fears rose as they thought of their kids. Oh to feel their tiny hugs.

Two days later with commute from Athens, they ended up in Paris. No seats on flights to the United States, they had no choice but to separate…to Journey home on separate flights, over long distances through different countries. It was their only option. A few other stops, and days later they arrived home. Apart but together. Safe.

What a trip!

Ever experienced anything like that when things to awry? No doubt. But be encouraged. Stay stay the course and you will achieve your goals. As bob Marley sang,

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there

Just drive! Hit the road! It doesn’t matter where you’re going. Just drive! There’s not much to that. With no plan, anything you do will get you nowhere. But that’s more than likely not your intention. There’s more Interest and satisfaction for example when you plan your career, or a vacation…knowing exactly where you’re going; researching the cost of airfare, hotel accommodations, tours, not to mention the ton of fun you’ll get from the planning exercise itself!

Here are 11 Goal-Setting Quotes selected that will inspire you to achieve:

  4. If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. -Jim Rohn
  5. The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. -Michelangelo

  7. A goal without a plan is just a wish.
  8. It’s not about the goal. It’s about becoming the type of person that can accomplish the goal. – Tony Robbins

CHALLENGE:

Adopted from MoveMe. Set one Goal that you can commit to achieve.  Then, make sure you put it in a place where you can be reminded of it every day.  For example, you could turn your goal into a poster and place it on your bedroom wall, or you could make your goal your smartphone background, or you could put your goal on your work desk – anywhere that you will see it often.  Finally, try to tell somebody what you’re doing and tell them to hold you accountable.  The power of accountability can never be overemphasized.  When you have somebody to report to, you will be more likely to push through on days when you don’t feel like it and see your goals through to the end!

Me Time…

CNN headline news reported that a Mom left her Kids Alone at Home for a trip to Europe! Witty? Unbelievable? Hilarious? Crazy? Call it what you wish. But in this age of focus on self, it’s not uncommon to see people taking things a little too far (well…very far as in the case of Europe…no pun intended). Let’s make sure that we are not doing things for ourselves to the detriment of our own lives, and those of our loved ones. Now that mom will be jailed as a result of her time away. Read story here

First Things First…

Ever spent time searching for something that you know will not add any value to your day? The crazy perfectionist in me does that sometimes. Today, I searched for information and went crazy trying to find something that was like a needle in a haystack. I search, and searched, and searched. An hour later I said let me try this database just once more…maybe it’s here. Another hour later, another database…maybe it’s there. E-filing problem? Definitely!

The thing is …what I was searching for was just something that if I used it in a project, it would be a nice to thing to do. But that search lasted hours and I drew precious time away from the things I really needed to focus on.

Coming up I have a Launch, a presentation, book signing events, and group sessions that needed my attention. Yet….all these goals were lingering while I wasted time on the unimportant.

Putting First Things First

Has this ever happened to you? I’m sure (smile). But though it irks, we need to focus on the important things first, then the other things will eventually fall into place. To answer your Witty thoughts…no, I did not find the document I was searching for. But I was reminded of the principle of putting important things first before other things. Your goal maybe an entrepreneur venture, it may be financial, family, career, or other. But putting first things first, will help you get things done.

What about you? Have you ever experienced this? Do share! would love to hear.

Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends: Pick 3.

The online Mega media Inc. recently posted this Question. Thought I’d share for our reflection to find out what we are Focused on. Personally, I am a recovering workaholic. It’s argued that if entrepreneurs and career high achievers are honest with themselves, the rest of life tends to get pushed out of balance.  The challenge is to focus on what’s important. Building a business, family, taking care of our health, or connecting.

Over to you. reflect, retreat then share your thoughts. Be honest. Can’t wait to hear!

15 Things To Do By Yourself…

Spending time alone is one of my absolute pleasures. I’m sure I’m not alone. You may also like to do that as well.  I had some planning to do and decided on a whim to jump into my car and drive to the beach. A few hours later, I had mapped out plans for my top goals for the rest of the year! yea! I left feeling totally satisfied to get things done! What seemed like an Irrelevant exercise turned out to be quite productive, in a serene atmosphere.

Jo Chunyan shared a list of things do alone. I decided to pull my top 15 to share.

  1. Journal. Write up a list of things you would love to do. Declare your dreams and intentions or simply empty out all your thoughts into your notebook.
  2. Spend a day at a museum or art gallery
  3. Meditate – sit. Be still and devote time to listen to your spiritual thoughts. Breathe.
  4. Have dinner on your own in a nice restaurant – take time to really enjoy the food
  5. Go for a walk and enjoy breathing the fresh air
  6. See a film at a cinema on your own
  7. Rearrange your wardrobe and discover old clothes again.
  8. Donate old clothes, books and furniture. Make room for the new by clearing out the old.
  9. Go somewhere in the city where you have never been
  10. Give yourself a mini retreat weekend…eat healthy food, go for a massage, spoil yourself and really relax!
  11. Sip a cup of tea and look out the window
  12. Be Athletic. Go for a jog or walk on the beach. Breathe in the salty sea breeze and watch the waves lick the shore.
  13. Study. Sign up for an online course in any topic you have an interest in and learn something new
  14. Take a photo to depict each hour of your day
  15. Travel on your own. Learn something new about yourself.

Can you add any? Do share!

5-Step Checklist to Get Yourself Out There!

Scared as heck!

Hear this all the time….”Get yourself Out there! Get known! Let others see you! Let them get to know you!” But we are as scared as heck! What if we fail? What if people mock? What if we don’t say the right things on the business proposal, or the employment application? What if we do get the call but unable to give the right responses during the interview exchange? It would certainly be a Mighty fall!

Build Your Personal Brand!

If this resonates with you, here is J. Duncan’s 4 step checklist to help build your brand:

  1. Contact 10 new people by email, direct message, or phone, and introduce yourself.
  2. Do the Same with 10 old friends, colleagues, a person you admire to simply reconnect over coffee, or lunch meeting.
  3. Attend Tradeshow, Conference, or events at least once per month to build your brand, and create new network
  4. Learn Something New everyday…very important

Getting yourself out there to expand your network is no easy feat. But it’s well worth the effort. It’s a surefire Goal-Setting initiative that will certainly bring you positive result. A mentor or coach can assist.

Facing Distractions: 13 Ways To Manage…

img_5679

a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else.

At the start of the week I decided to do a webinar on Goal Setting. Then Hurricane Irma blew in. Evacuations, preparations, and plans to survive stepped in. To Disobey would attract serious consequences from authorities. After the hurricane passed, recovery, and rebuilding efforts were initiated in the midst of loss of electrical power, downed trees, devastations, and more. While giving thanks for life, I began feeling frustrated. My goals for the week had gone awry.

Well that’s natural disaster which does not happen very often. But what about those other times when we face distractions? We get angry, annoyed, depressed. But that doesn’t help. They may ‘comfort’ and provide a semblance of excuses, but they are no help. Here are 13 ways entrepreneurs responded on how to avoid distractions from Goal Achievement, and how to remain productive.

  1. Keep your eye on the goal, and realize that entertaining the distractions keep you away from the finish line
  2. Priorities and lists
  3. Do all the hard stuff first in the day
  4. Tune out distractions
  5. Get motivation from mentors
  6. Hunger for success helps keep focus
  7. Get up and do the work. Whether others do their part or not
  8. Being still
  9. Saying No to things that distract, and Yes to Focus
  10. Develop a routine
  11. Mastermind groups
  12. Write goals and today list. Then visualize what I want to achieve. Stay positive and grateful
  13. Give in because it’s a challenge. Then work extra hours to make up

What about you? How do you avoid distractions? Do share…, we would love to hear.  Need help? A mentor or coach can guide you. Let’s connect.

Fear. Overcome It…

Don’t Dwell On it.
My daughter text and said “Mommy, I‘m afraid”. I asked “what are you doing”? She replied “watching the news all day and social media. Now they’re talking about the effects of the natural disaster.”
Stop. Turn the TV off, or change the channel.
Aren’t we all like that? When we fear something challenging coming up, we become afraid. We binge-watch the issue in our minds over, and over, and over again.  We can’t sleep. We play the Fear game.
It might be nervousness for an impending interview, it might be a change in position and we feel ‘they’re going to find me out’. For sure they’ll discover that I’m a fraud….I can’t manage the work for the promotion.
It might even be that you’re getting married. The closer you get to the date, fear or anxiety sets in the midst of the excitement. Will it last? Will we be compatible? And on, and on, and on we go.
Like I said to her …Stop, don’t dwell on ‘it’. It will only lead to harm.
Instead, Focus on what you CAN do about your situation. Overcome. Do Something positive. Bask in the preparation. Protect your family. Prepare your responses for the interview. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Focus on the positive.
Prepare. Pray. Relax. Breathe. Then you won’t be caught off guard.
Cheers!

Job Hop? Nothing Lasts Forever…

The bad news is nothing lasts forever,
The good news is nothing lasts forever. – J. Cole

Many were accustomed to working with the same company for 20-30 years. But the average life span of employment with the same company these days is 3-4 years. Big challenge for employers, but seen as career advancement for Generations Y and Z.

So as an HR Consultant, I challenge you to start looking at your knowledge, skills, and abilities. It’s important to see which of your knowledge is transferable. Look at different industries to find out where you can fit in. Life changes. It’s important that you change with it. Consider Setting Goals. Remember, to stand still is to be left behind. Waiting on termination $$$? Good idea. But if you Continue, are you sure that you will get it?

A company I consulted with sold its ownership to another company with less than a week’s notice to employees. They were transferred to a new entity without warning; without being asked if they wanted to or not. If they didn’t want to be transferred they would need to resign but with how much payment, and time to start a search?

So I encourage if you’re a mid-senior career professional it’s Critical to start thinking now about the next step in your career. Don’t leave you life to others.

Cheers!
