Destiny: Is Your Passion Worth Dying For?

the football field is the perfect place to die”.

CNN shared the findings that Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy ((CTE) disease was found in 99% of deceased ex-NFL players. A Rookie NFL 🏈 player said he is willing to die for the game. More directly he said “the football field is the perfect place to die”. Was he being insensitive? Possibly naive like a tethered Toothbrush? Arguments differ.

But it caused me to think …is your passion worth dying for?  Substandard? Possibly….but what do you think?

Do share.

Does Being Rich Make You Successful?

img_4137-1

I have always been fascinated by the topic of Success. So much that I decided to do three (3) years of research on success and leadership. I interviewed leaders at the top of their organizations to find out what they considered to be the traits that led to their success, and the Challenges they had to overcome. Then I was lucky enough to have the findings published in the Journal of American Academy of Business Cambridge (JAABC), as well as other books.

These days when I go around to speak or attend conferences and events, I take the opportunity to find out what success means to individuals. Listen to Miko Branch Founder and CEO of Miss Jessie’s as she shares her definition of success. Miko is recognized as Pioneer for transforming the haircare industry for natural and curly hair.

Brian Tracy asked the question “Does Being Rich Make You Successful?” Responses came in many forms from those responding “YES–But“, to the more common “No’ responses giving their reasons why.

Thinking further about this Pest-like Lusted phenomenon that defies many, I heard of an ailing executive rolling in the $$$, who had an incurable condition. He was asked the question to which he replied that he would give all his money in exchange for life.

Isn’t that crazy? What most dream and become obsessed about, those who have it would exchange it for life’s normal everyday living.

Define Success

Personally, I believe it is important to define what Success Means to you. It’s no Coincidence. How will you know when you have achieved it? Defining it helps you to visualize your expectations, whether it is to be ‘rich’, get an education, start a family, land that dream job, or become that all time successful entrepreneur. Whatever your goal for success, take the step today to achieve it.

Now its your turn. Do you believe being rich makes you successful? Can’t wait to hear your take.

Cheers!

What Have I Done? This is Crazy!

What have I done? This is crazy!

New job offer. Relocation. Tons of change. Excitement in the midst of fear.  But it comes with the territory. Getting up and going to another land…faraway. Giving up the familiar is no Snack. It is scary… but when we do it, we learn new things about ourselves and about others.

Have you ever watched HGTV’s House Hunters International? Well if you have, you would know that those who take on moving from one country to the next have brave hearts. They give up jobs, family, friends, and often wish they could take their home culture with them. Often they must give up a lot. China! New Zealand! Paris! Japan! The Caribbean! and more for those fascinating new ventures!

We often say we want a change yet we want to hold onto the familiar. It’s normal. In my early career managing international HR, I had the task of sending executives to relocate overseas. It intrigued me so much that I studied Cross Cultural Management. It was often a challenge for those who took the step. But those who embraced the host culture survived beyond the honeymoon stage. They became acclimated to the new culture filled with its languages, people, food, and new experiences.

But like anything else, it works if we stick with it. Naturally if you find yourself among those who don’t like the experience after you’ve done it, no problem. At least you can still say “I did it“!

Only the adventurous can gleefully say “what have I done? This is crazy!” with a smile and the satisfaction of new learnings, and exposure.

Cheers to the new adventurous you!

Stepping Out Into The New: Advice for New Entrepreneurs…

feel the fear but do it anyway! Damon Johns, Business Executive of Shark Tank asked the question: “if you had a piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?” People all over boldly shared…

Derrick has been frustrated in his job as manager of operations. He has been at it for years but his job has lost its zeal. He could apply for the Branch Manager’s position but he wasn’t sure he had what it takes to manage the responsibilities. Besides, he has been thinking about following his passion for design and wants to launch out into his own business. But the sense of Qualm he feels has put him in a state of inertia. He has been afraid that he might fail.

Many are the dreams of people like Derrick. The fear is real but like I’ve always said…feel the fear but do it anyway!  Damon Johns, Business Executive of Shark Tank asked the question: “if you had a piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?” People all over boldly shared their views. Because Collaboration is key, I’ve compiled a list extracted from their direct responses. Choose one, two or a few, and apply as you like.

Advice for New Entrepreneurs

  • Cashflow is king. Make sure you’ve got cash in the bank to ensure you’re covered for not pulling a wage in the early days
  • Work on yourself to know what you’re doing very well. Be persistent and consistent.
  • Document every step of your journey, no matter how trivial you think it may be. The data you think is not important today, may prove to be invaluable tomorrow.
  • Money talks.
  • All progress not saved will be lost.
  • Always find reasons and new motivations to keep going at it.
  • If you hang around 9 people that are ‘broke’, chances are…you’re going to be number 10.
  • Its rough… I mean really rough. Stick to it and take the bumps in stride.
  • Do something you love so you never work a day in your life.
  • Doing what you love and are great at-is the easy part. Mind the business with equal effort or you’re doomed. Marketing, networking etc. and don’t ever forget … never play it safe. Take risks, and go after it.
  • Work hard. Focus and be unreasonable. This is what creates discipline and growth.
  • Don’t get so busy that you forget to say your prayers.
  • Value yourself, believe in you when no one else will. Right before you quit, try one more time with a different plan of action. Always be true to yourself and others. Make time for fun, not all work.
  • It’s not going to be easy but know that with paitence and persistence it will happen. Be around the people going in the same direction that you want to go.
  • Never give up. Fight for your dreams.
  • Just be yourself. Don’t try to do what everyone else is doing just because everyone esle is doing it. The business model that works for others might not work for you. Being an entrpreneur is your chance to do it just the way you want to!
  • To work at it every waking hour.
  • Say the phrase…finish it.
  • Believe in yourself and take risks.
  • Best advice I learned from running my company is it’s ok to be a bitch sometimes. Clients and customers will treat you with respect sometimes. Other times they run all over you taking advantage of your kindness. Balance is key. Ya gotta know when to put your foot down and look people in the eye with “that look” and speak your true mind instead of putting on the “professional front” through their bullshit.
  • Stay laser focused on the goal even if your strategy isn’t perfect yet. Make progress daily.
  • Keep going.
  • To start.
  • Find someone that has something you want. Do what they do and you will get what they got.
  • Start …like the end doesn’t matter.
  • A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins.

So that’s the list. Different opinions but great diversity. Are there a few that resonates with you? Anything missing that you could add? Take a look again and if you’re still busy dreaming…start doing today!

Cheers!

Failure: The Final Frontier…

img_1561

Failure, is it the Final frontier? Oprah Winfrey learned that failure is only an illusion after her cable network started off poorly. She said the worst time in her professional life came when the Oprah Winfrey Network’s (OWN) ratings plummeted a year after launch. Later, in a Harvard commencement speech, Winfrey said that she told herself repeatedly that failure is an illusion. She said “there is no such thing as failure. Failure is just a lie trying to move us in another direction.

Brian Tracy asked the question “What is the best advice you have ever received for overcoming your fear of failure?” Responders shared:

  • Don’t hate your weaknesses, God will meet you there!
  • You will never experience true success without learning from some level of failure
  • No matter how slow, just keep on moving
  • FAIL = First Attempt in Learning
  • Think BIG. Act BIG. Get BIG.
  • Don’t bury your head in the sand and expect a pat on the back from me. It’s hard. You go to hustle but you will be fine.
  • The worst that can happen is you mess it up, or get told no.
  • We fail every time but each time we must fail better
  • Failure never fails you as long as you’re willing to learn from it
  • I don’t need to overcome fear of failure.  I seek failure.
  • Believe.
  • I reckon I’d be amazing in my job if I could get past the fear of failure and what everyone will think
  • What’s the worst that can happen?
  • Behind fear is desire
  • Nothing ventured, nothing gained
  • Don’t ever quit. Keep going
  • Motion conquers fear
  • Work hard and be patient
  • You can’t be successful without failure
  • That’s ok…do it scared
  • You have to get uncomfortable to be comfortable
  • Break it up into small parts when you get scared. Then take small steps. Never give up and you will always find momentum…and you’re off…that’s the magic
  • The fear of failure has killed more dreams than failure ever has
  • Not Trying- that’s the only failure
  • Nothing ventured. Nothing gained.
  • Keep going
  • Take massive action

Diverse responses but you get the picture. My personal mantra remains ‘feel the fear….but do it anyway’. Essentially, don’t let fear get in the way of you going after your goals.

Oprah encouraged when you’re down in the hole, when that moment comes, it’s okay to feel bad for a little while. Give yourself time to mourn what you think you may have lost. But then learn from every mistake because every experience, encounter, and particularly your mistakes are there to teach you and force you into being more of who you are.

So don’t be afraid. Failure is only Temporary. Pursue your passion. Win, lose or draw…you tried! No regrets.

Cheers!

Success Starts Here….

Peter Souza, former official White House photographer, when asked about his success said “you have gotta start somewhere and there is no one path to be successful”  (in his case photography). But I extend it to say, it is the same thing for any endeavor we strive for in life. You have to start somewhere.

So when you feel Cranky, keep Climbing. Give it your best shot. Believe and you will achieve.

Dreams: Epic Selfie 🤳

Goals inspire! They ignite our passion to dream, to prepare, to plan while ultimately enjoying the journey. Sure some dreams are safe! Some risky…even explosive!

TIME Magazine shared the story of a young lady who trespassed on a private property to take a selfie on California’s highest bridge. She slipped and fell 60 feet below! Luckily for her, she only suffered several broken bones, an Outlier that in her Tenacious efforts knocked her unconscious but she lived to Heal and tell the tale!

I attended a meeting recently and the dream of one young lady was to visit Arizona to take a selfie 🤳 on a cliff. Love the dream! But…are such dreams worth your life should you slip?

Goals inspire! They ignite our passion to dream, to prepare, to plan while ultimately enjoying the journey. Sure some dreams are safe! Some risky…even explosive! Some make our mouths water! With all that, let’s use wisdom to survive, to thrive to reap the benefits!

What is Your Biggest Fear?

Let’s face it…bad things happen. People disappoint. Businesses fail. But what is worse is if we never try at all.

I love nature and always choose to live near a lake, pond or stream. What comes with that is nature’s creatures like squirrels, ducks, and my worst fear –lizards! My fear of them makes me search to find them before they sneak upon me. My imagination runs wild as I think of their creepy, crawley features that makes me real scared. Mind you, it has not happened but my fear, like Cusps, makes it real to me…yikes!

Aren’t we all afraid of something? We sure are. But what is fear? Why are we afraid?

FEAR is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

What is Your Biggest Fear as an Entrepreneur?

Daymond John asked the question of entrepreneurs “What is your biggest fear?” The answers varied but most common were:

  • Getting taken advantage of by investors
  • Going bankrupt
  • Failing
  • Not getting a second chance
  • Not being able to make ends meet
  • Not making back the money put in
  • Going out of business

Let’s face it…bad things happen. People disappoint. Businesses fail. But what is worse is if we never try at all. Many are the reports of individuals who attained success during the short term (as in technology), or over the long term.

When Laziness Means Success…

People waste years trying not to waste hours. Admit it…many of us are like that… especially the type A’s.

People waste years trying not to waste hours, says author Michael Lewis.

Is being lazy a good thing? That’s what Michael Lewis said in this INC article why being lazy makes you successful. He postulated that being lazy is the key to Success. But is it for real? Lewis achieved much in life so I’d hardly say he was lazy.

However, what I’d say is that he focused on things that were in fact important, and did not spend time being busy… for busy sake.

Admit it…many of us are like that… especially the type A’s. If ever we find ourselves not doing anything we feel as guilty as ever. I have a colleague who broke her leg during a vcation trip and she found it like hell to be sitting in recovery…not being able to do the things she wanted to do.

So I encourage you the next time you find yourself being busy, it’s Prudent that you look around and ask the question, “is this adding value to my life…to my long term goals and dreams?”

If not, let it go. Refocus.

Cheers!

Passport: Your Key To Success…

with success. Life happens. Things change. It happens even while we are en route…in full pursuit

Passport… a thing that ensures admission to or the achievement of something

Years ago when I managed the HR portfolio for a region of a major pharmaceutical international company, we sent managers to different countries worldwide. Once while in mid-air the laws changed in one country while a traveling manager was en route on business. Naturally stressed, the manager was detained by officials until we were able to sort out the ‘new’, yet needed requirements.

So it is with success. Life happens. Things change. It happens even while we are en route…in full pursuit. But I am here to tell you that things will sort themselves out if you keep going. If you never give up in spite of the obstacles that you may encounter while pursuing your dreams, goals, and aspirations.

Today, keep going…don’t stop.

Cheers!
