Fear. Overcome It…

Don’t Dwell On it.
My daughter text and said “Mommy, I‘m afraid”. I asked “what are you doing”? She replied “watching the news all day and social media. Now they’re talking about the effects of the natural disaster.”
Stop. Turn the TV off, or change the channel.
Aren’t we all like that? When we fear something challenging coming up, we become afraid. We binge-watch the issue in our minds over, and over, and over again.  We can’t sleep. We play the Fear game.
It might be nervousness for an impending interview, it might be a change in position and we feel ‘they’re going to find me out’. For sure they’ll discover that I’m a fraud….I can’t manage the work for the promotion.
It might even be that you’re getting married. The closer you get to the date, fear or anxiety sets in the midst of the excitement. Will it last? Will we be compatible? And on, and on, and on we go.
Like I said to her …Stop, don’t dwell on ‘it’. It will only lead to harm.
Instead, Focus on what you CAN do about your situation. Overcome. Do Something positive. Bask in the preparation. Protect your family. Prepare your responses for the interview. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Focus on the positive.
Prepare. Pray. Relax. Breathe. Then you won’t be caught off guard.
Cheers!

Take This Job And …

HLN’s Carol Costello in her interview with a representative, clarified his statement that he was resigning right there and then… on The Across America National TV program. As she probed, he confirmed his decision that he was resigning effective immediately. Did he submit a written resignation? He replied that he had not, and did not intend to do so. The interview was his way of saying Take this Job and Shove it.

Is that form of resignation acceptable? It sure is. I have seen resignations done in numerous forms ranging from a hilarios post-it note on a supervisor’s desk, the flight attendant who resigned on-flight, to the news reporter who resigned while delivering her report. And of course, let’s not forget the usual acceptable form to Elevate notice… in writing.

But before you jump to do the same, there are things to be considered. I am certain that the representative that was being interviewed live, had given some thought to his decision before. We were just not privy to it. Undoubtedly, there are many who have turned in their resignations with immediate effect without thinking about it. The next step was filled with regrets and excuses about being emotional and angry. As an HR practitioner for many years, I have had my share of employees who have acted in the heat of the moment, then later we had to work together to clean up.

Resignation: A Few Tidbits

Think before you act. You’re frustrated. Yes it’s understood. But are you adequately prepared for the next step in your career?  Do you have up to 3-6 months savings to cover your bills while you job hunt or decide on the next step? How is your public profile? When employers conduct a research, what will they find? Educate yourself on life after your frustrating job.

If you experience that negative feeling in your gut in your attempt to answer these questions, let’s connect. I will help you decide on the process to get out of your comfort zone to do what you always wanted to do.

Remember, Consult with me before you act!

Job Hop? Nothing Lasts Forever…

The bad news is nothing lasts forever,
The good news is nothing lasts forever. – J. Cole

Many were accustomed to working with the same company for 20-30 years. But the average life span of employment with the same company these days is 3-4 years. Big challenge for employers, but seen as career advancement for Generations Y and Z.

So as an HR Consultant, I challenge you to start looking at your knowledge, skills, and abilities. It’s important to see which of your knowledge is transferable. Look at different industries to find out where you can fit in. Life changes. It’s important that you change with it. Consider Setting Goals. Remember, to stand still is to be left behind. Waiting on termination $$$? Good idea. But if you Continue, are you sure that you will get it?

A company I consulted with sold its ownership to another company with less than a week’s notice to employees. They were transferred to a new entity without warning; without being asked if they wanted to or not. If they didn’t want to be transferred they would need to resign but with how much payment, and time to start a search?

So I encourage if you’re a mid-senior career professional it’s Critical to start thinking now about the next step in your career. Don’t leave you life to others.

Cheers!

What’s your thoughts? Can you add anything?

Vince Lombardi, former head coach of the Green Bay Packers said that if you’re not keeping score, then you are just practicing. It will be worth it to Memorize that Quote. While practicing is important, most of our goals in life need to be focused on achievement. If we intend to get to where we want to go, then we need to keep a tab on our progress…be it studying, new homeownership, marriage, starting a family, new career, new entrepreneur…whatever it is, keep a tab on it.

Today, reflect on your own path that you have trekked over the past year. Make changes if needed. Celebrate small and/or big wins. Then keep going. You’ll be glad you did.

Entrepreneurship & Parenting: The Balance…

Is there a balance between being an entrepreneur and being a parent? Nicole Walters is an entrepreneur who adopted three kids, the eldest of who just started college. After dropping her off and getting her all settled in, her freshman student decided to have a ball! She went silent on the homefront.

Not hearing from her for 2 days, her mom and dad decided to shower her with love on the second day on campus. Check it out on Facebook.

Parenting

Was Nicole being too strict? Do you think kids should be allowed to make their own mistakes? If so, at what cost? If not, why not?

Can’t wait to pay Homage to your views.

There is Nothing Quite So Useless as Doing with Great Efficiency Something that Should Not be Done at all.

-Peter Drucker

TV Presenter, Author, and Coach, Andrew Eggelton did a video titled “nothing“. It intrigued. I thought he was kidding around but a week later I decided to watch…to see, to hear what the heck he was talking about. What is nothing?

Interestingly, he shared how he asked his staff what they were working on and they quickly (yet smartly) replied “we’re busy“. But he quietly observed to himself that it looked like a bag of  ‘nothing‘ to him.

How many of us scurry around doing this or that in our daily lives? We are busy doing the mundane; the routine; the things we think are important for perception…for others looking on to see. We rush to jobs we hate. We take the kids to extracurricular activities to keep up with the Joneses. We get ready for dates with the ‘ideal’ partner that look right to others but deep down goes against our inner desires. We scamper to buy ‘stuff’ to Inhabit houses that detract from the nurturing ambience required to make it a home. Not to mention spending thousands of dollars on education that Dignify onlookers, while failing to pursue the careers post graduation. It all boils down to nothing.

But why do we do it? To look good? Makes little sense.

Nothing means having no prospect of progress, or value. Renowned Management theorist Peter Drucker, shared that there is nothing quite so useless as doing with Great Efficiency, something that should Not be done at all. Yet how many of us spend our time doing just that. Doing something so efficiently that should not have been done in the first place. Nothing compares to value.

Today, I implore you to Change your nothing. Start focusing on something. Everything you do should be aimed at achieving your goals, dreams, and aspirations. Doing the things that are meaningful to your life. The things that you have always wanted to do. So let your nothing be something today.

What Would You Attempt To do If You Knew You Would Not Fail?…

motivationalquotes-SC-3D

What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail? – Robert Schuller.

Fear retards us. We get caught up in the ‘what if’ scenarios? What if I leave that miserable job…how will I feed my family? What if I take the leap into that new business, will it hurt me? What if I go back to school to pursue that dream career? What if I try this…what if I try that… and fail? Amidst my Reservation, will it be Finite?

The question is, what if you never try? How will you know what you are capable of doing? Sometimes situations beset us as in the case of Steve Jobs who was fired from the company he started. Naturally, he was sad—even devastated. But when he started doing the things he wanted to do, he discovered something different and exciting! The rest is history as we have all benefited from the pleasures of connectedness. It is now common practice to see people walking around as if in a Trance with heads buried in their phones. Pleasurable yet risky practice. But it all happened because of one guy who chose to step out.

Quotes That Quote

To get over our fears, we turn to green pastures that we find in family, friends but most of all we find solace in Quotes. Quotes are motivating. We all have our favorites. They encourage us to do something. When the going gets tough, many turn to a motivational quote for a bit of inspiration. To hold on–to become stronger. Quotes are displayed as pieces of art throughout our lives. We find them at work, in offices, at home, in educational institutions, in museums, on T-Shirts, or those Chinese fortune cookies that most gravitate towards after a meal at a restaurant.

As a transition coach who specializes in individuals going through change, whether in their career or becoming a new entrepreneur, I have researched and published books on Success. I also post motivational quotes on Instagram daily. Recently, I decided to archive a few. In doing so I selected the most popular and well-liked quotes and published them into a book. The idea was to provide a compiled resource for those on or offline, who prefer to open a book for a daily boost of inspiration.

I hope that the quotes selected and published in the little pocket-book titled “Motivational Quotes to Boost Your Success“, will Ooze you or a friend to take the step to try something new, something different. No doubt you will find it Magnetic and exhilarating as you step out.

Read. Be encouraged. Share with a friend.

9 Tricks To Learn Everything Faster….

Courtesy of LifeHack

Lurch

I watched my daughter’s 2-year son -RJ learn to eat, talk, walk, and more. It was an exhilerating experience to see his little efforts. Almost simultaneously, I watched my mom being ‘forced’ to learn life’s simple things all over again after experiencing  a massive stroke. It was sad. Oh the contrast of those two bitter-sweet experiences.

But for most of us who must learn to adapt to the evolution of life whether through advances in social media, technological revolution, using work gadgets, or simply learning to adapt to life’s Lurching changes. Some choose to avoid it, while others regardless of age, quickly adapt.

Lifelock put together a brief list of tricks to help us learn faster. As we get into gear for 2018 Goal Setting Retreat, my fav learning tricks are:

  1. Breaking down difficult tasks into smaller ones
  2. Focus on one small skill at a time
  3. Learning from mistakes
  4. Teaching others
  5. Focusing on the 80/20 rule

Those are my favs. Which is yours?

Do share.

Cheers!

It’s Elastic!

Suddenly…without notice, as if in a Trance…things changed. Airports closed. Luggage on flights that were terminated. No way out from…

A year ago my daughter and her husband went on their dream vacation to the beautiful and historic Greece. The country prides itself in the wanders of joy, and rich history. Travelers are never disappointed.

To get there, they journeyed by cruise, plane, taxis and foot. Every moment of planning the trip was filled with beautiful excitement, longing, and delightful dreams of what was to come. And when the day finally came, it didn’t disappoint. They had a wonderful time! 10 days exploring the mountains, valleys, monuments, eateries, and more.

Then the day came for their departure. Filled with pics, souvenir, and memories to Recite to last a lifetime. Suddenly…without notice, as if in a Trance…things changed.

Unrest erupted in Turkey. Airports closed. Luggage on flights that were terminated. No way out from Athens. Flights cancelled, they had to seek alternate accommodation at nearby hotels. Yet no sleep. Fears rose as they thought of their kids. Oh to feel their tiny hugs.

Two days later with commute from Athens, they ended up in Paris. No seats on flights to the United States, they had no choice but to separate…to Journey home on separate flights, over long distances through different countries. It was their only option. A few other stops, and days later they arrived home. Apart but together. Safe.

What a trip!

Ever experienced anything like this? Sometimes our goals go asunder. But only the strong survive. Don’t give up. As bob Marley sang,

“never give up the Fight” – Bob Marley

Goals …keep going. Don’t Stop. You’ll get there.

Cheers!
