Where do you wish to travel in the next 1-3 years? Which destination tops your list? Do you dream of traveling to enjoy the culture of others near or far? Traveling to learn about other people in distant lands?

Like Cavity, in the movie Eat. Pray. Love; Julia Roberts Imagination ran wild when she decided to get away to (as it were) find herself. Well she was not alone. The question was asked where’s your dream travel location? A few said “All over the world”, but while we Sympathize, that doesn’t count. Goals must be specific to be achieved. Travel Afar: A Moment’s Notice…

By the way, wanna come?

Leyan was out with her friend buying last-minute items for the apparent Silhouettes of a trip to Europe, when suddenly they asked if she wanted to come. She thought about it. Being away from work for a few weeks she had nothing planned. Like a Trill without thinking too long she turned and said…oh why not.

Immediately they called to book travel arrangements and the next day she was off. Coincidence…don’t you just love ’em?

Have you ever done it? I mean thought about doing something way out of the blue at a moment’s notice? Here, we are not thinking about life situations where you have no choice such as sickness, and others. We’re talking here about just getting up and going somewhere that will benefit and relax you …

Just Because

Just because you’re you. May I challenge you to try it one day. Just get up and do something different…something unique, something you’ve never done before. Trust me, you’ll surprise yourself, while others will be left aghast, you’ll be smiling all the way.

How They Started…Writers Tell…

Ever wanted to write? Ever wondered how other writers got started? What’s their Funnel? We are intrigued by writing veterans the likes of Stephen King, and countless others. Many wannabe writers are scared to take the leap. So it was with a breath of fresh air that the writing tips asked the question about how writers got started. Intrigued, I dug deeply. Here I share excerpts of some of their thoughts.

I Write Because….

I hid in my words starting at 10 to hide from the pain
My cousin said that I looked like someone who writes poetry. So I gave it a try, and fell in love with it.
I always loved reading and wanted to create stories. Then my parents took me to see the dolphins when I was 8 or 9 years old, and I wrote my first story about this adventure. After this I feel in love with writing because sometimes the stories we create or even just a part of them can become true.
I was 5 years old and wrote about a superhero
I didn’t want to do my math homework but still wanted to look like I was being productive, and that’s how I’ve written about two books.
I had a dream and wanted to make a story out of it
I can’t remember a time I haven’t been writing! Before I could write I drew the pictures and told my parents what to write
What really pushed me into writing other than school assignment was role-playing
When I was younger I had a speech impediment the only way I could truly talk was through writing. Still to this day I write better than I can talk.
My baby sitter wrote stories about the group of kids from our neighborhood who were superheroes. I loved listening to her read them, my love of reading and writing was born, I was 3-4 years old
My siblings and I used to create the most intricate imaginary games. As I got older, I began wanting to write them down. I haven’t stopped.
A sixth grade narrative assignment. Upon handing it back, my teacher said I had talent and could make it as a writer. I was speechless.
So I could be right-brained in school while looking like I’m working on my assignments
I started when I was mentally at a shitty place and needed an outlet to how I was feeling. Writing became my therapy. It healed me.

The Leader In You…

What do we do in a crisis? When things change within a minute….when there is little or no warning? That’s when Leaders jump in. They take control. Does it matter if they wear the leadership hat? No, it doesn’t. That’s when Quiet Leaders step up; they jump into action.

So what does being a leader have to do with you?

You may say, I am not a leader so this does not pertain to me. But reflect on your life. Are you a parent? Do you have responsibilities on the job? Do you play sports? Are you a sibling? Are you a part of an association, club, church, or more? If you reflect on these, you will find that all these call for some form of leadership skills. At its inner core, we are responsible for leading our own self.

Leadership Lessons

John Wooden’s memoir titled Lessons From a Legend revealed Wooden’s success as a person and as a coach. Lessons included:

The stance that sports do not build character but reveal it
Individuals must pay attention to details
Individuals should be careful of complacency by being quick, but not hurrying
Individuals should also act with integrity
Individuals should build a foundation for success.

Wooden’s Pyramid of Success indicated that at the top of the pyramid was competitive greatness. On the levels leading up to it were key milestones such as loyalty, friendship, and team spirit. Winning or losing is a byproduct of individual preparation.

So are you Waiting on the formal leader to show your potential? Please don’t. Arise from Underground. Step up you Quiet Ones. Strive, take the lead. It’s in your potential.

My Success Journey in 3 Minutes…

You can do and be anything you want to be

I Looked around and saw the need in society to encourage youths and ethnic minorities to go after and seek to do what they wanted to do. This quest took me on a journey… through a process of highs, and lows. Highlights include:

1. Giving up my well-paying job/career to accomplish my dream. Sometimes you have to give up the good to achieve the great.

2. Embarking on a Journey that dug deep into Leaders and how they achieved Success

3. Publishing my research in a book on Success Strategies and leadership

4. Publishing Workbook on Success and how you too can do it

5. Publishing a book with Motivational Quotes To Help you stick to your dream.

6. Publishing a documentary video to share with others

It’s humbling to see the impact this sacrifice has made in the lives of others. So as we approach the start of a New Year, if you find yourself wondering about your purpose; wondering about your future; wondering about how to get where you want to go, then do what I did…Just start. Find a mentor or coach, or speak with a trusted family member or friend.

So today, take the step to do what you want to do. Otherwise you’ll find yourself at the end of another year being stuck and never accomplishing anything.

Why Are We So Afraid?

Celebrity Adrienne Bailon of The Real, and The Cheetah Girls movie, questioned herself “what if people don’t like it?” What if her music is not accepted?

I shared recently the responses received from entrepreneurs to the question what’s stopping you? It was no surprise when the responses were summarized, they boiled down to Fear. People are afraid to step out. They are afraid of failure and of what other people may say.

Celebrity Adrienne Bailon of The Real, and The Cheetah Girls movie, when asked why she was not singing confessed that she was scared. She was afraid. She questioned herself “what if people don’t like it?” What if her music is not accepted? She went on for awhile talking about her fears. We gasp because we cannot fathom someone at that level who has enjoyed success over time to still be afraid.

As we Knit together the various facets of our lives we often feel like an underdog in different areas. We may be successful at one area and feel afraid to step out in another.

If you are like Adrienne, I implore you to take that Percussive step. What if you fail? To that I say….at least you tried. Also I suggest that we stop taking life so seriously. Do some things just for the love of it! Just for fun! When we adopt that kind of thinking, we find that we often succeed and find ourselves able to soar, to achieve great things.

So today if you are afraid, take the step to try something new. Who knows, you may surprise yourself.
