Don’t Fear Failure…

Don’t fear failure. Fear being in the same place this time next year.

Where were you this time last year? If you’re in the same place, it’s time to move. Don’t let 2020 catch you in the same place.

It’s Fall! Purge! Mindset Reset…

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there

Nature. Life. The seasons. Don’t you just love them? Nature naturally brings change. We see them in the leaves. Animals hibernate. The weather brings warmth, cold, sunshine or rain.  As we start Fall, HGTV’s Joanna Gaines shared checklist to prepare for this season.

Like many of us, I just want to get to the good stuff. Joanna recommends for us to:

  1. Purge
  2. Organize
  3. Create Mental Shift
  4. Visually Reset

Of all the steps I hate purging. It’s annoying. It involves lots of work to get rid of my ‘good’ stuff! But purging is necessary. Because we hate doing it, we find it progressive to rent storage units to keep our stuff. Oh, what can I say?

The Good Stuff

On the other hand, my favorite is to get to the good stuff and start decorating! Just love that! But what’s more essential are the ways she recommends that we conduct what she refers to as a mental shift. For those who need a change…. my preference from her list are:

  • Start a Journal
  • Keep a calendar
  • Plan a Gathering
  • Set weekly or monthly intentions

Setting Goals

It’s important to set Goals. Like I have always said, if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there. So consider where you are now. Are you where you wanted to be at the start of the year? If not, do a mental review and reset. Yes, you may be disappointed but don’t remain in that state too long. Push forward. Start working on your goals again. Let nothing stop you. Before you know it, you will be steps closer to your dreams.

As you reflect on Joanna’s list, what step do you enjoy the most? Do share. We would love to hear!

Cheers!

17 Ways To Inspire Creativity…

Write. Create. Inspire to achieve.

Who would have thought a flock of birds would create such havoc? Yes indeed. Though extremely rare as one in a billion, it happens. The movie Sully shared the real life story of the pilot whose quick decision saved passengers on an aircraft he was flying. He landed in the Hudson River, and Miraculously saved over 150 lives. It’s a story of humility, bravery, admiration, fear, teamwork, leadership, and most of all calm in the midst of tragic circumstances. Doesn’t this story inspire you?

Who Inspires You?

Brian Tracy asked his audience “Who inspires you?” Many responded giving answers such as God, family including mom, dad, spouse, as well as leaders like Brian Tracy, Oprah, John Maxwell, mentor, teacher, coach, political leaders, and more. But surprisingly, one response stood out when a male said that he was not inspired by anyone or anything. Bewildered? Should this be reason for…

Life. It’s The Little Things…

Heal the World. Make it a Better Place. ~Michael Jackson

Save a Life. For my Birthday, I Donated. You should too.

Toni Morrison. Novelist, Essayist, Editor, Professor Emeritus. The Tale…

Inspired. Informed. Educated. An iconic life exceptionally captured in one piece by author and educator Tiffani Knowles.

Excerpt cited. Read Tiffani’s full piece here

It was 1965, after splitting from Harold, when she began her career as an editor at Random House where she was instrumental in publishing American writers and luminaries such as Angela Davis, Henry Dumas and Muhammad Ali.

Yet, she knew there was a story that still needed to be told, one she hadn’t read or seen before.

At first, she was private about her own writing and would do so as a pastime very early in the morning before her boys would wake.

“I remember reading the ‘Bluest Eye’ and thought it was wonderful,” said Robert Gottlieb, a Random House colleague and the chief editor of the Alfred Knopf sub-division.

When Random House got wind of the fact that she was publishing, they wanted to keep her work in house and so, with the exception of one book, Gottlieb got to edit all of her books while they were published through Knopf.

Her first book, as Morrison claimed, intentionally eliminated the white gaze without “codes or notes explaining things to white people,” as she decided to put the entire plot on the first page.

“Quiet as it’s kept, there were no marigolds in the fall of 1941. We thought, at the time, that it was because Pecola was having her father’s baby that the marigolds did not grow.”

It was 1970 and “The Bluest Eye” boasted a story inspired by a conversation Morrison had had with an elementary schoolmate in Lorain many years before.

Her friend told her she had been asking God to give her blue eyes and he never did.

“How painful … can you imagine that kind of pain?” Morrison recounted for filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders in the “The Pieces I Am” documentary. “So, I wanted to say, this kind of racism hurts. This is not lynchings and murders and drownings. This is interior pain. It’s so deep to know that an 11 year old would think that if only she had some characteristic of the white world, she would be OK.”

You’ll Never Reach A Point In Your Life Where Everything is Solved…

“You learn to love the mess of your life, its constantly changing nature, its unpredictability. And you stand as the immutable silence in the midst of the storm, the wide open space in which joy and pain, ecstasy and agony, boredom and bliss, can arise and subside like waves in the ocean. There are no problems when you know yourself as the space for it all. ~Ariana Huffington

The Goal You Seek. Is It Worth The Effort?

A young Mom passed away after her dream of getting the right body back after having three children. Her own mom (kids’ grandmother) told how she worked 2 jobs for a year then finally had saved enough money. She scheduled and went to the surgery but unfortunately stopped breathing during the procedure.

The Right Focus

Make sure your goals are the right focused. Her three kids must now go on to live a life without their mother. Chances are the same situation existed while she was doing the two jobs. They are now without her for good after she succumbed to the very surgery she worked so hard to have.

No criticism here.

We all want the perfect things. Hey… that’s why we set goals. In the case of that young mother she worked hard, did what she had to do. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes you fail. if you have the opportunity to try again. Go ahead and do it.

Just one thing …Remember you’re beautiful just the way you are. Take care of you. It’s the only you, you have. Survive so you can enjoy the goals, dreams and aspirations you worked so hard for.

How about you? When was the last time you Reflected on the purpose of the goal you set? Do share. We would love to hear.

Cheers!

The Power Of Resilience When Things Go Wrong…

Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Those were the words echoed by Susan. She suffered a massive stroke. Her life as she knew it was turned upside down. Here’s her story of resilience.

Be inspired to overcome the odds.

Sometimes in life, bad things happen to good people? Life is happily going along and things are relatively in a good place. One event can occur and your life as you know it is completely turned upside down. In June of 2016, I had this happen to me. I experienced a stroke, due to a carted artery dissection. I went from an actively engaged, full time working school nurse and mother of two daughters, to be in a rehabilitation hospital for a month trying to recover from left-sided hemiplegia..learning to walk, swallow, eat and move my left arm and hand. I had no indication.

Other than being human, I was at risk for this to happen to me. When I was discharged home, I had around the clock caregivers. I attended therapy three days a week until my insurance visits were exhausted I was only allotted 20 visits per year, I was fortunate to be able to begin walking independently, by September. It was about this point that I learned I would have to enroll in intensive rehabilitative therapy to return to work. It took 6 months and a lot of my savings to graduate. Then I learned my old job which I loved and I was motivated to return to, had been given to someone else. I was offered a different position. It was very kind of the school, I accepted the new challenge with a positive attitude. My left arm and hand were no longer making progress like the rest of my body had. I received an email from Saebo about their products and the no plateau in sight motto. I also learned about neuroplasticity. The only thing holding me back from my old career path at this point is that I am still unable to effectively use my left hand and arm.

When I saw the advertisement for an arm boot camp I knew I had to attend. I learned I would be a good candidate. I was thrilled they were able to schedule me in April of 2017. Three intensive days of therapy, with the opportunity to take over your own recovery at home and continue therapy on your own. I was initially so excited I ordered the Saebo devise to help me with the gross movement of my fingers. My therapist near my home helped me to put together the device. It did enable me to pick up objects. However, it was not until I actually attended boot vamp that I learned about the balls and how important repetitive movement is to stimulate the brain to regain the lost function. It felt so awesome to actually be able to use my left arm and hand for something again. Upon arrival to camp, Henry promptly refitted my devise and I was determined to become the Saebo ball transfer champion. We were introduced to many other devices and activities. By the time I left, I had put together my own program to continue my therapy independently at home. I am still using my therapy equipment. I went back to one day one on one camp day this year. During the camp it is a 1:1 ration one camper per therapist you get the therapist for a full day of therapy. I came home with a new glove to help my fine motor movements improve. I am still not 100% back to my old self in the left arm. I am seeing continued improvement and I am not going backward. Saebo provides the therapeutic avenue for independent stroke recovery. I am so grateful I took the chance in the initial boot camp experience and have built this therapy routine into my busy life. The best thing is to tailor it to fit your needs and fit it into your lifestyle in the way it works best for you. I wish all stroke patients were introduced to these devices immediately after the stroke. I was seven months out before I began this therapy.
