13 Ways To Get Out Of Your Head

You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take. ~Wayne Gretzky

I heard a TV host who was showing a young lady how to use a piece of equipment which she was actively trying to learn. She went into a what if scenario to which he retorted with the question… “are you pre-planning your mistakes?” She laughed.

It reminded me of how we often act. We think of everything that could go wrong instead of thinking of the things that could go right. What if I go after the entrepreneurship venture and fail? What if I apply to the job and they turn me down? What if I invest in the relationship and it doesn’t work out? What if scenarios play over and over in our head. It gets us nowhere. Get out of your head and take…

Books And Legacy…

Books are my legacy. They live on. ~Dr. Shelly C

Books are my legacy. I began my journey to leave a legacy for my two girls and their offspring-future generations. Non-fiction, that’s mainly what I write. I researched the topics of Success and leadership so that those in my circle of influence will be able to define success for themselves. The goal being to design their own paths to achieve.

The Quest To Drive Their Legacy

Fast forward a few years, I have been asked by the aspiring ones to help steer their writings to become authors. This I gladly accepted as an additional way to leave a legacy, through others, as they too leave a trail. From poetry, memoirs, children’s books and more. It’s been a pleasure to do.

As my heartfelt quest says, Books are my legacy. They live on.

What’s your legacy? Do share, we would love to hear.

Cheers!

A Late January Evening By The Seashore…

By the sea I couldn’t wait to be. To sit causally on the sand. Me, towel, book and birds all in one as the mighty waves thundered and splashed against the seashore. The weather forecasted it would be the coldest day of the season. Disappointment soared at the spoilt prospect yet still I was determined to chill (literally).

I sat still gazing in the distance. Cold yet relaxed. It was as if there was not a care in the world. I watched the little bird hunt its food fighting against the rushing waves as it eroded the shore. “Give up,” I shouted. But it didn’t as it tried again and again to grab another peck, and another peck. It’s little body was no match for the cold windy weather, but it was yet to give up.

That Smile

That smile… my smile, as usual with it’s pleasantries drew in passersby. Many waved hello and flashed smiles in turn. Then along came an aged one. She spilt her life story in 20 long minutes. Deflecting, I was pleased to have been there to allow her tales of melancholy. A journey of sickness, travel and friendships throughout the years. Amidst her quiet tears and outstretched arms, a flash hug ensued (but alas what of Covid?!) she eventually walked on.

As the sun set, what more could I ask for? A late January evening of peace and quiet. Distant laughter reigned from sultry beach lovers against the sounds as the mighty sunset waves splashed!

Do it again I mused. Tis pure bliss of memories made in tow.

11 Goal-Setting Quotes That Will Inspire Success…

If you don’t know where you’re going, any Road will take you there

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there

Just drive! Hit the road! It doesn’t matter where you’re going. Just drive! There’s not much to that. With no plan, anything you do will get you nowhere. But that’s more than likely not your intention. There’s more interest and satisfaction for example when you plan your career, or a vacation…knowing exactly where you’re going; researching the cost of airfare, hotel accommodations, tours, not to mention the ton of fun you’ll get from the planning exercise itself!

Quotes That Inspire

Here are 11 Goal-Setting Quotes selected that will inspire you to achieve:

  1. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
  2. You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight. – Jim Rohn
  3. When you say ‘Yes” to others, Make sure you aren’t saying ‘No’ to yourself.
  4. If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. -Jim Rohn
  5. The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. -Michelangelo
  6. This one step…choosing a goal and sticking to it…changes everything. -Scott Reed
  7. A goal without a plan is just a wish.
  8. It’s not about the goal. It’s about becoming the type of person that can accomplish the goal. – Tony Robbins
  9. If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan, but never the goal
  10. People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. – Earl Nightingale
  11. A goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot. – Joe Vitale

CHALLENGE:

Adopted from MoveMe. Set one Goal that you can commit to achieve.  Then, make sure you put it in a place where you can be reminded of it every day.  For example, you could turn your goal into a poster and place it on your bedroom wall, or you could make your goal your smartphone background, or you could put your goal on your work desk – anywhere that you will see it often.  Finally, try to tell somebody what you’re doing and tell them to hold you accountable.  The power of accountability can never be overemphasized.  When you have somebody to report to, you will be more likely to push through on days when you don’t feel like it and see your goals through to the end!

To Fail Or Not To Fail? Entrepreneurs Speak…

Dr. Shelly's avatarSuccess Strategies

Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough. ~Og Madino

To fail or not to fail? That is the question. Fail Fast. How about don’t fail at all?  That was the statement James Altucher posed in a public forum. Entrepreneurs jumped in sharing their beliefs, values and thoughts on the concept of failure.  Names have been omitted as I share excerpts:

What It Means To Fail

  • A person who hasn’t failed is more likely to have never been successful
  • The message of “fail fast” is not to encourage failure. What it speaks to is moving action with ideas instead of analysis paralysis and never-ending planning. No amount of analysis and planning can prepare you for the reality of launching something. This is what “fail fast” means. It does not mean to emphasize failure. Build it (now). Measure it. Learn from it.
  • The wisdom in “failing fast”…

The Challenge That Equipped Me…

Dr. Shelly's avatarSuccess Strategies

I procrastinated. Year after year I’d say …I’ll do it next year. But then in my early 20s, during a heated conversation about salary increase my boss shouted “you don’t even have a degree!” That hit me like a ton of bricks. I promised myself that I’d never ever let anyone say that to me again. I was not only gonna get a first degree but also a second.

That’s How You Do It

Today, I have two Masters and a Doctorate.

That’s how you do it. I’m one for a challenge to not only achieve but also exceed. So even though at the time I had several diplomas, certifications and had never stopped studying, I fell short of that industry’s ultimate standard. I limited myself and did not go after the best.

My parents never thought of …nor encouraged me to get a degree. They never had it themselves…

5 Strategies For Successful Job Returnship…

A vision without a strategy remains an illusion.

Lee Bolman

Camilia laughed and laughed out loud as she sat watching reels on her social media channel. She then slumped down, placed her head in her hands as the tears began to flow. The pandemic had done a number on her and she was now at her wits end because she needed to get back to work. Oh what could she do? The daily depression had set in as her bills piled high.

Many are in similar situations as Camilia and that’s where the Today’s Show article titled 10 Tips on getting back into the workforce with ‘returnships’ becomes applicable. Of the 10 strategies, I’ll list my top 5 favorite which is key to your getting back into the peace of mind that a meaningful job brings.

5 Strategies To Help You Get Back To Work

  1. Define what What Success Means to you. This is very important. Like I have always said “if you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there” and who knows where you will end up. The book Ditch it Switch it shares several sample definitions of successful leaders that you can either adopt or tweak to suit your situation.
  2. Dedicate Time in one, two or three hour blocks. As a coach to aspiring authors that is exactly what I preach. A book is written over time and not all at once. In the same way it is important to plan your path and map out what you would like to get done to prepare for that job. Is it research on top companies in your area? Is it that you would like a career change and you are unsure of the type of job that you would like to get into? Do you need to upskill? These are some of the things that you need to consider in order to get to your desired end goal
  3. Network. Network. Network. Can’t say that enough. Alert people in your network to the fact that you are on the hunt. Combine that with online networking groups and you will be surprised at what turns up for you.
  4. Fill your cup first. Here Tami Foreman -the author. speaks to self-care. Job search does take it’s toll especially when you don’t receive the ‘yes‘ that you want. You may find these self-care tips helpful
  5. Take Risks and be Persistent. I have always maintained to go after what you desire. Let them turn you down. Do not self-reject.

Whatever you do, be consistent and serious about it. You will find with consistency comes reward if you don’t give up.

What are your top tip(s) that you would like to share with someone getting back into the workforce after being out of work for some time? Do share, we would love to hear!
